I like 4x4/offroad trucks and this is still an abominable thing that should be nuked from orbit. Also, on the thread consolidation derail - I was fine with: terrible (terrible stuff people say/put on their cars/you took pictures of, terrible cl listings, etc go here) awesome (see above) horrible mechanical failures (because they are awesomely horrible, they kinda don't fall in either category) but I rarely look at the cl thread, so I don't really care either way.

MadScientistWorking posted:Its a near instantaneous oxidation meaning that you can't actually find a chunk of aluminum that doesn't have a layer of oxidation. we here in the rust belt have more words for rust and oxidation than eskimos have for snow. There are many kinds of aluminum oxide... the shiny kind that you're talking about, which is an invisible thin layer of oxide that protects the base metal, the crunchy white powder kind that jams steel bolts into aluminum parts so badly the heads twist off, the slightly greasy feeling white growth kind that appears on a cast aluminum part left out in the rain. The list goes on.

MadScientistWorking posted:You actually are right there are multiple forms of corrosion. Though why the hell would anyone be stupid enough to join steel parts with aluminum. well, I hear aluminum engine blocks and transmission housings are the bees knees, but at some point you need to bolt them to a steel frame somehow... or for that matter bolt them to anything! Proper e-coating the bolts with something can help (iirc, subaru uses cadmium plated bolts, and those seem to come out quite nicely) and using improper coatings can really make things worse (like whatever they use on the bolts holding an air conditioning compressor down on a jeep, based on color I'm guessing regular zinc plate.)

As usual, we have a useful chemical (mercury, asbestos, lead, cadmium) with many awesome properties that solve problems and make things way better, but also suck health wise. Where do you draw the line? Me I'm fine with a thin coating of cadmium on bolts I'll be threading into aluminum and trying to get back out. Why? Because apparently it's only really released when they are ground, and... I don't have to grind them, because they come out so easy when coated in cadmium. You know something works well as a corrosion preventative coating when it means I can pull bolts out of cast aluminum, in the rust belt, 15 years after they were last touched. Some terrible stuff. Got stuck behind this guy doing 15 under the limit on one of my favorite roads. When a Jeep Cherokee with a completely thrashed stock suspension and a broken swaybar link can out-drive you on your CA vehicle (do trikes count?) by a huge margin, you are doing it wrong. Saw this turd at the junkyard. Note the windshield markings... my only question is WHO THE HELL STEALS SOMETHING LIKE THIS?

why do people call 911 while their car is going too fast? It's not like the police are going to catch up and jump through the window to help or something, all they can do is try and figure out where the crash site is going to be if you're that stupid. The "oh no call for help instead of helping myself" mentality just doesn't make sense to me. PUT IT IN loving NEUTRAL

yikes, I did not mean to start that big a derail. I should note: gas where I lived in the late 90s/early 00s hit 99c/gallon. milk cost around 1.29/gallon. gas now: high $3 to low $4 range. milk now: $4.29-4.59/gallon. Honestly I say it's more an issue of inflation that various governments try to sweep under the carpet by changing the makeup of the consumer price index. That's more of a D&D subject though, so... Spotted on rt20 east at the traffic light for the Home Depot right by 395/290/20 in Auburn MA. Yes, that's either hay or straw in the back seat.

A common cause of the two dubs/spinners, two steelies effect is a speedbump or series of potholes... or the owner being too poor to buy all four at once, in some cases. nearly had a horrible mechanical failure. U-joint cap spit out as I was accelerating up an entrance ramp onto the highway, fortunately I recognized the bang and lurch for what it was and pulled over immediately. Put a few layers of aluminum foil tape around it to keep the axleshaft from flopping about and then very, very slowly and carefully limped it to the nearest hardware store to buy tools to repair it properly. No worries, the tape did not have to handle actual torque loads, just had to support the inner axleshaft and keep it centered in the steering knuckle so it wouldn't smack into things.

I saw a guy driving an altima with a sheet of cementboard (literally, 1/2" sheet of cement with fiberglass mesh embedded in each face) tied to the roof with a single loop of twine through the doors... and a beach towel to keep it from damaging the paint. It was flapping up and down wildly at the front edge and beating the roof senseless. Just as I passed him it finally snapped and the front half folded over, tore off, and slammed down on the hatch lid. I can only imagine what that did to his paint, hell, it probably dented the sheetmetal.

I've been making pretty decent money recently doing side jobs for people with lovely cars who ignored all advise I and everyone else gave them, so I can't knock it too much. Did a head and head gasket replacement on a friend of a friends cadavalier a while ago. Mutual friend had told him to get either an XJ cherokee or a forester, and that he'd help him fix it for free/parts cost, he ignored it, tried to buy like 3 different busted-rear end ZJ grand cherokees with horrible drivetrain issues, then ended up buying this stupid hacked up (fan wiring running on a fuse double overrated because it kept blowing, CEL on, exhaust in tatters and supported by hoseclamps and bits of random steel rod, rust holes, in general just a turd) 01 cavalier from the shadiest dealer in town for approximately 4-5 times its worth because the mutual friend was not answering his phone when he called to ask about it. The kicker? it sat for around 4 months because he wanted nothing to do with fixing it ("I told you so, why did you buy this piece of poo poo" didn't work either) and... they are still making payments on it it cracked the head and/or blew the head gasket before the 7 day return period was up, they brought it back and instead of insisting on a full refund as they should have, they allowed themselves to be blindfolded and accepted a new thermostat and water pump. Yep, it went right back to being a POS a few weeks later when whatever magic in a can they pumped it full of leaked out. Also just did a CV shaft, plugged a tire, and front rotors/pads on an Audi for another friend, but I can't really fault him for that one, because it's a fairly clean silver A4 Quattro Avant with a manual and a 1.8T, that he got for a decent price.

Rugoberta Munchu posted:My older brother's first car was a 1985 se-i with that identical interior and exterior, but with a sunroof, manual transmission, and hail damage. My first car also was an '85, but with the 3-barrel carburetor and automatic transmission. The fuel system itself began corroding, causing it to eventually run on 3 cylinders. Then the brake master cylinder blew, which would then suck all of the air out of the engine, killing it when the brakes were applied. That was "fixed" with a vise grip on the brake hose. I sort of miss it all these years later. That sounds like the brake booster vacuum hose - had that happen on my truck, pushrod seals went bad and it would create a massive vacuum leak when touched, so the engine would get way too much air and almost stall. It was a good excuse to upgrade the booster and master cylinder.
