Early 16 Horsepower has the same kind of non-standard structure and dark vibe.
Megafaun has similar elements, especially clawhammer banjo over chord progressions less common in traditional bluegrass.
Sam Amidon maybe?

Yeah, the earliest Wovenhand (and occasional songs on later albums) is really reminiscent of 16 Horsepower. He's still a master of gothic folk when not doing the deep psych doomy stuff.

This isn’t really bluegrass, you need to be looking into old time and early American folk music.

This harry smith anthology is a good starting point, lays out all the influences that spawned country music, bluegrass, folk revival/rock...

For music like this you will have better luck looking for "old-time" rather than "bluegrass".

I've likely suggested this before but its been a while.

Highly recommend https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org/visit/ and Bristol Radio. The main channel you can get on Tunein, but they two additional channels through their site. One is all Americana, the other is Classic. And I am here to tell you they play some deeeeeeep cuts.

For those looking for "Old Timey Music" check out https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org/event/born-in-the-mountain-2/2023-09-12/

Here's a show they do where they play poo poo they found in old record bins. https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org/event/dollar-country-2/2023-09-12/

Yeah he wrote several songs that have entered the bluegrass/folk canon, most notably Rock Salt and Nails which JD Crowe, Flatt & Scruggs, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan and The Band, Waylon Jennings, Tyler Childers and many others have covered and which I imagine paid most of his bills.

All Utah Phillips songs:
