The Handsome Family is a pretty reputable husband and wife duo... but they sound like 50s pulp western tv theme songs. I can imagine a Handsome Family song playing as the credits to Bat Masterson or whatever rolls by. Brilliant lyrics though, the wife is a legitimate poetical master mind. edit: Speaking of Hank 3, his backing band on tour used to be Those Poor Bastards. This is the group that started me into the gothic side of country for the first time. It's very Marilyn Manson type vocals with a zombie cowboy rhythm. It's the type of music I imagine the Undertaker from the WWF would be interested in. People who know my musical taste (namely my wife and my brother) listened to it once and said it was my perfect style of music (as a fan of Tom Waits, Johnny Cash, Neko Case, and Morricone/Tarantino twang). Some of my favourite artists are ones that I've backed on Kickstarter. So we've got: Caitlin Jemma - reminds me of Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan at times, last I heard she was slowly working on her third album which I can't wait to hear. Highway 395 Revisited - from her second album "Lick them Wounds" on her Bandcamp page Weeds - from her first album "Home Means the Hills" Maria Quiles and Rory Cloud - more of a laid back folky type music - these guys have just successfully Kickstartered(?) a new studio album so I'm looking forward to hearing how that turns out! All My Trouble Gone - from their YouTube page Long Time Coming from their YouTube again The Emilees - these ladies have really great lyrics, and their music is more contemplative Wish You Well The Vimeo that got me to support them In the Valley of Enna from YouTube - this song gives me goosebumps when I hear it from their ep. The Locust Honey String Band - a three piece playing a more traditional style with close harmonies Trouble in Mind from a members YouTube page, it doesn't appear on their album You can find some more samples here - I'd recommend "He Ain't No Good" Marah in the Mainsail - I backed these guys even though they're christian and I'm a huge internet atheist (read: fat) but their music is that good. Despite only having one EP and two singles out, their sound is very well realised and tight, and their singer has a good husky voice that hides his age well. Devil in the Woods A wonderfully atmospheric song about being chased by the devil or something Headsmen Another song off their debut EP. All their band names link to either their bandcamp page or their website if you want to support them

Sons of Perdition are real gothy but more mellow whereas TPB are louder. Goth-Country is a real fun genre to pursue for me in part because of the heavy religious imagery. Nickel Creek show review: Wowee wowee wow wow holy loving poo poo goddamn. Also, this was Nickel Creek's first-ever arena show, which is cool in and of itself. At the end, my dad (who is a veteran of more and better concerts than anyone I know) turned to me and said "If that's the last show I ever see, at least I'll have saved the best for last." I couldn't agree more.

I'm so glad I found this thread! I've been on a pretty huge folk/alt-country kick for awhile and love finding new bands. I've been trolling through this thread all week and found some great new stuff in here. I'm also glad to see some Old 97's fans in here too! They've been my favorite band for a good number of years now, through the alt-country and their pop phase. Figured I'd share a few bands I've been loving here as late, maybe spur some further recommendations. Some of these bands I've seen in here, but maybe not these songs! Chuck Ragan - Valentine Dudes voice is righteous. Has some really great storytelling in his songs too. Lydia Loveless - To Love Somebody Discovered Lydia Loveless by finding out she'll be opening for the Old 97's here in Indianapolis. Had never heard of her, so figured I'd check it out so I was familiar for the show, turns out here newest albums "Somewhere Else" is really great. To Love Somebody stands out to me, she's got a bit of a Stevie Nicks vibe going I like to think. Deer Tick - Ashamed I love the story telling going on in Deer Tick. There's a bunch of albums too and it's fun to watch them experiment with their sound over time. War Elephant's my personal fave. Audra Mae - Snake Bite I found Audra Mae, by looking up who sang backup vocals on Chuck Ragan's Valentine on the album cut. Found her name, looked her up on spotify and was blown away! Her voice is super soulful. Audra Mae and the Almighty Sound is a good place to start. The Tallest Man on Earth - Love is All This guy's great. He's a great guitar player and has a great voice to go with it. Watching him play solo on Jools Holland's pretty great. He's got a lot of full shows on Youtube too. Also a really good storyteller. (Can't you tell I like storytellers?) So, there ya go!

It's really great; he has this voice that's a dead ringer for Waylon Jennings or Merle Haggard but with trippy, almost psychedelic lyrics. This thread is great! I've recently found Old Crow Medicine Show and Goddammit am I in love. I've never been a huge country fan with a few exceptions like Hank Williams Sr, Loretta Lynn and of course Johnny Cash, but listening to Old Crow its just a revelation. I guess they're more Americana and Bluegrass than traditional country but whatever they are I want more. Clicked through that Rolling Stone list for who knows what reason. It should have really been called 75 of the best country songs and 25 utterly poo poo songs from the last twenty-five years. There were a few inspired choices though like Jimmie Rodgers at #5. There was a book called Heartaches by the Number: Country Music's 500 Greatest Singles that came out a few years ago. I've never read it, but someone compiled the list as an unofficial compilation and posted it online. Well worth tracking down if you can find it since it's 95% must-listen, IMHO.

So Tom Hiddleston will be playing Hank Sr. in another attempt at a biopic. Maybe there can be a post-credits scene where the Avengers round up all the contemporary country artists who insist on namedropping Hank in all their songs while sounding like Bon Jovi hosed a Bass Pro Shop and like Thor just wails on Florida-Georgia Line with his hammer.

The Isbell, Cooley, and Hood reunion show from last weekend sounded freaking amazing. They sound like they never stopped playing together and it's great to hear them having a great time.
