If you like Hank III, make sure you check out Wayne Hancock. Wayne laid down a lot of the foundation of Hank III's country sound, fusing classic Hank Williams with modern production. Thunderstorms & Neon Signs is probably his best, but I love Tulsa too.

EDIT: Oh, and if you like Steve Earle you owe it to yourself to listen to Townes van Zandt. Live at the Old Quarter is, for my money, the best country/folk/whatever album of all time.

The Handsome Family is a pretty reputable husband and wife duo... but they sound like 50s pulp western tv theme songs. I can imagine a Handsome Family song playing as the credits to Bat Masterson or whatever rolls by. Brilliant lyrics though, the wife is a legitimate poetical master mind.

edit: Speaking of Hank 3, his backing band on tour used to be Those Poor Bastards. This is the group that started me into the gothic side of country for the first time. It's very Marilyn Manson type vocals with a zombie cowboy rhythm. It's the type of music I imagine the Undertaker from the WWF would be interested in. Satan Is Watching might be a good one to start with, but all their albums are a similar style.

I really liked this, and would be something perfect to listen to around Halloween. I went through several of their albums today. You mention Gothic country, any others worth trying? I like music very evil sometimes.

Also anyone else doing the white trash country thing like Hank III that is worth listening to?

Let me give a couple of suggestions.

The Hackensaw Boys if anyone is in the mood for good string band music. I think over the years they have had over 20 different members (one of the founding members was Tom Peloso of Modest Mouse), and they changed half the band since I last saw them in December. Great live shows, and worth seeing as long as Ferd is still in the group.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzP8NAt2yZ4

Former OCMS member Willie Watson (might of been my favorite member). His debut album is coming out May 6th, but here he playing in Bristol, TN/VA.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohhmJGDVrxA

Also let me give a shout-out to banjo/keyboard player David Moore. He is the headbanging banjo player in Langhorne Slim and the Law, and while not the best banjo player, he is fun as hell to watch on stage. He has some great side projects up on Band Camp. Here is one of his side projects The Piledrivers (funny song that Birdcloud would be proud of).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAaDnIMIJn8

My favorite picture of David Moore. Even years later you can still see the bloodstains on his banjo.

Some of my favourite artists are ones that I've backed on Kickstarter. So we've got:

Caitlin Jemma
- reminds me of Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan at times, last I heard she was slowly working on her third album which I can't wait to hear.
Highway 395 Revisited - from her second album "Lick them Wounds" on her Bandcamp page
Weeds - from her first album "Home Means the Hills"

Maria Quiles and Rory Cloud
- more of a laid back folky type music - these guys have just successfully Kickstartered(?) a new studio album so I'm looking forward to hearing how that turns out!
All My Trouble Gone - from their YouTube page
Long Time Coming from their YouTube again

The Emilees
- these ladies have really great lyrics, and their music is more contemplative
Wish You Well The Vimeo that got me to support them
In the Valley of Enna from YouTube - this song gives me goosebumps when I hear it from their ep.

The Locust Honey String Band
- a three piece playing a more traditional style with close harmonies
Trouble in Mind from a members YouTube page, it doesn't appear on their album
You can find some more samples here - I'd recommend "He Ain't No Good"

Marah in the Mainsail
- I backed these guys even though they're christian and I'm a huge internet atheist (read: fat) but their music is that good. Despite only having one EP and two singles out, their sound is very well realised and tight, and their singer has a good husky voice that hides his age well.
Devil in the Woods A wonderfully atmospheric song about being chased by the devil or something
Headsmen Another song off their debut EP.

All their band names link to either their bandcamp page or their website if you want to support them ;)

Yea, a lot of the goth country bands are on same label. Sons of Perdition are real gothy but more mellow whereas TPB are louder. Goth-Country is a real fun genre to pursue for me in part because of the heavy religious imagery. I just love the line "Put the Bible to your head and pull the trigger."

I'm not really into Ghoultown. It's too rock. I like primative stuff.

In the Air and Singing Bones are the two most talked about.
But wow! Handsome Family got a song as a TV show opener? They've worked so hard at it that's it's just wonderful their fans are in the tv biz and gave them a shot! They were in Searching for the Wrong Eyed Jesus so that's definetly a good moive and soundtrack to look for.

If you want to get real crazy, Caroliner Rainbow is the most alt country ever made.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tXGA3-6a80
It's in the spirit of American Primative. It's like folk in a blender. My favorite album by them is The Cooking Stove Beast. It's an acquired taste, but they first got me interested in banjo and old time music.

After the avante garde crazy stuff, the old time banjo is a good palate cleanser. My number 1 old time player is Fred Cockerham. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txhfwNA9znE
The past 10 years have been a super trendy time for the Round Peak banjo scene. Cockerham and Tommy Jarrell are the big players in the Round Peak style. Tommy Jarrell is known mainly as a fiddler. Some good docs about him by Les Blank.

I'm so glad I found this thread! I've been on a pretty huge folk/alt-country kick for awhile and love finding new bands. I've been trolling through this thread all week and found some great new stuff in here. I'm also glad to see some Old 97's fans in here too! They've been my favorite band for a good number of years now, through the alt-country and their pop phase.

Figured I'd share a few bands I've been loving here as late, maybe spur some further recommendations.

Some of these bands I've seen in here, but maybe not these songs!

Chuck Ragan - Valentine

Dudes voice is righteous. Has some really great storytelling in his songs too.

Lydia Loveless - To Love Somebody

Discovered Lydia Loveless by finding out she'll be opening for the Old 97's here in Indianapolis. Had never heard of her, so figured I'd check it out so I was familiar for the show, turns out here newest albums "Somewhere Else" is really great. To Love Somebody stands out to me, she's got a bit of a Stevie Nicks vibe going I like to think.

Deer Tick - Ashamed

I love the story telling going on in Deer Tick. There's a bunch of albums too and it's fun to watch them experiment with their sound over time. War Elephant's my personal fave.

Audra Mae - Snake Bite

I found Audra Mae, by looking up who sang backup vocals on Chuck Ragan's Valentine on the album cut. Found her name, looked her up on spotify and was blown away! Her voice is super soulful. Audra Mae and the Almighty Sound is a good place to start.

The Tallest Man on Earth - Love is All

This guy's great. He's a great guitar player and has a great voice to go with it. Watching him play solo on Jools Holland's pretty great. He's got a lot of full shows on Youtube too. Also a really good storyteller. (Can't you tell I like storytellers?)

So, there ya go!
