Still contemplating why I didn't register here under a clever pseudonym

Just saw Marty Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives, and I'm glad I made the trip. All 4 band members singing the choruses on "El Paso" was worth the ticket all by itself, plus he did a solo mandolin version of "Orange Blossom Special" that was pretty epic. Chris Scruggs also gave a couple of the best upright bass solos I've ever seen.

I'm on a kick of trying to go see all the surviving country singers I can remember my grandma actually enjoying. I'd like to see Dwight Yoakam this year, but it looks like his California dates are in Napa and the Orange County fair, both of which are kind of a pain to get to for me.

I would love to see Marty Stuart I bet he definitely puts on a great show. Lyle Lovett and Dwight are two others I definitely would like to see. Dwight yoakam was here recently but I missed it :negative:

Just saw David Eugene Edwards in concert :getin:

He's a little rusty around the edges and didn't pick up the banjo at any point which was a little disappointing, but I did get to see the two old heads I convinced into going be very upset at his "terrifying lyrics" :D

Anyone have suggestions for darker folk/country? Examples are stuff like Devil Makes Three, Brown Bird, or (some) Legendary Shack Shakers. I really like that stuff but have no idea how to dig deeper lol.

I’ll throw out The Handsome Family and Murder By Death. Maybe Amigo the Devil too.

For the absolute best, start with Slim Cessna's Auto Club and Munly and the Lupercalians.
Also, Townes Van Zandt was a troubled man who wrote a lot of dark and sad music.

Others:
The Pine Box Boys
.357 String Band
Jayke Orvis
The Goddamn Gallows
Split Lip Rayfield (more rowdy fighting and drinking music, but some of it's kinda dark)
Blood on the Harp
Black Eyed Vermillion

That's just what I listen to at times. There are a shitload of gothic country and "murderfolk" acts out there these days. A lot of them are boring and kinda one-note, but there's some good stuff. Spotify and Youtube playlists are a good way to find a few. You're already on the good end of the spectrum in my opinion with the Shack Shakers and Devil Makes Three.

Went to Billy Strings last weekend and man, I have never seen a bluegrass show like that. Absolutely crazy arena crowd losing their poo poo for 20-minute acoustic jams. And a 3-hour set too! Not to be missed.

I got exposed to Cole Swindell's "She Had Me at Heads Carolina" and that is one of the most unexpectedly disorienting experiences I've ever had with music. An avant-garde salvo in song recycling technology.

We're maybe a year away from somebody just prefacing an otherwise unaltered original recording with "ooh and it goes like..." and releasing that as their own.

Weathervanes by Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit is pretty dang good imo. Dudes just a really good storyteller, and also was able to keep him self from getting preachy on all except one (?) track. Really been getting a lot of play from me.

Not sure much of anyone is really left from that first generation of bluegrass musicians born in the 20’s and 30’s.

Cool seeing Slim Censsna dropped here, they're locals who have been at it for a long time and deserve the recognition.

I have been listening to a lot of Marty Robbins for the past year and occasionally a cover of Big Iron by Colter Wall would pop up. By his voice I assumed he was like 70 years old but apparently he is only 28 lol. Started listening to the rest of his stuff and he rules. Every song is great. His cover of the cowboy and the coyote is my new favorite song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tw0LWv61Vo

I’m trying to think of another singer with as unique/deep of a voice as him and all I can come up with is kris kristofferson or Waylon Jennings but lol even that’s not quite right. If you told me he was a long lost member of the highwaymen I would have believed you.
