I have developed a love for ambient country or whatever the hell it's called. Basically, I should feel like a loner walking through the desert of Arizona with my horse named Apache and a bad attitude. Ry Cooder's Paris, Texas soundtrack, some of Sumner McKane's work (even though he tends to go the more post-rock route), Daniel Lanois' soundtrack to Sling Blade are just some examples. Something about the sparseness of the twangy, reverbed out guitar and the beautiful slide guitar sound just sends chills up my spine.

Are there any other albums or artists worth checking out that fit this bill?

There was another person asking for something similar in another thread a while back, and I suggested Friends of Dean Martinez, who I think perfectly fit that bill.

I've been listening to a good amount of Gram Parsons recently, and he's my main goto in country music. I love the "hungover and drinking whisky in the morning" sound in country.

Have some good country songs by Ween:

Does anyone know who the girl is kneeling on the cover of Hot Burritos?

It wouldn't have been Emmylou. The Hot Burritos cover photo is from the same shoot as the Gilded Palace of Sin album cover and Gram and Emmylou hadn't even met at that point.

I haven't been able to find any times, but as far as I can tell the two girls on the cover were hired by the label to model for the shoot. They weren't anyone connected to anyone in the Flying Burritos Brothers.

Yeah it's definitely not Emmylou, but this tells me what I was looking to find out. She's just always been cute to me and I wanted to find out if she was known.

Does anyone have anything like 357 string band, hellbound glory, bob wayne, highlonesome? it seems like a pretty niche genre, but this is the closest thread to the style.

Listen to Must've Been High, by the Supersuckers. I wish they put out more country material. If you like this, their singer, Eddie Spaghetti, has some solo material in a similar vein.

Also, it's possible, on the off chance, that you might dig some of Ween's country material:

The Stallion, Pt 3 (not a country song by origination but done up wonderfully here live with slide guitar from some amazing Nashville musicians AKA The poo poo Creek Boys)

That version of the Stallion is from a bootleg called Country Tour Sampler 1996 and it's just awesome. You should be able to find it online if you dig that flavor.

I recently got turned onto early material from The Jayhawks. Was/is there anyone else doing a pretty accurate reflection of Gram Parsons' stuff like they did? A lot of the 'alt country' stuff I hear has a bit too much rock for what I like in country sounds.

Also while he is right about the state of modern country music, but it has been that way for quite awhile.

Alan Jackson released 'Chattahoochee' in 1992 for gently caress's sake. What a piece of poo poo song that was and it was 23 years ago. Same year as Achy Breaky Heart. Was 1992 the roping on the neck for modern country? Has it taken Don Henley 23 years to notice modern country has been on a long steady decline?

Terrible. I stopped it about 3/4 through. I won't be listening to that again if I can help it.

I like the cover. I feel like people just hold up Nirvana so much that no matter how it sounded people would poo poo on it.

Sturgill's cover of The Promise is way better though

I don't hold Nirvana on any pedestal and I was prime age (15) when Nevermind came out. It's just not a good cover song, that's all. It could have been great but it's not. It's certainly a bad single to release in my opinion.

Not even sure if this is the right thread, but can we talk about Alejandro Escovedo in here? He's playing local to me next month and I'm a VERY recent fan of him. Worth it?

I saw him about ten years ago and he was awesome. I was only a recent fan at best when I saw him. It'll be worth it if you enjoy his stuff.

This was at the Birchmere in Alexandria VA, where he happens to be playing again next month. Is that where you're seeing him?

Not sure if anyone will know, but what the hell -

The Supersuckers are coming to DC (and playing a local BBQ joint of all places). Does anyone know if they typically focus on their country material or the rock stuff when they play live?

Thanks. I may chance it and go. I like the country stuff more than the rock material but the rock stuff is what originally got me into them so I'm sure it'll be a good show either way.

Is there any good psychedelic country music? Not psychedelic folk, I know about that stuff. I'm looking for something that sounds like it should be sitar but is really a zither. Ideally from the 60s or 70s, but I won't say no if it's modern, it's just more interesting to me if it came out back when country music was seemingly (not really) less experimental. Somehow I feel like it's going to be Jesus music but that's alright with me.

New Riders of the Purple Sage (Jerry Garcia was in this band, and you said you don't care for the Dead but it leaned much more country than the Dead.)

I listened to this earlier with tears in my eyes. I'm loving torn up right now. He was my intro into country music over twenty years ago and expanded my taste deeply into folk and so many genres I didn't care about at the time. I was into electronic music around that time and a manager at a bookstore I was working at had the double disc "Great Days" anthology album and would play it on the store speakers. It really clicked with me and I bought a copy of the CD and from then I never went too long without having some John Prine on rotation.

Not many musician deaths have much impact on me but this is one of them. I'm going to be in even worse shape the day Bob Dylan leaves us.
