Trans Ferdinand posted:I played in a band, backing a singer-songwriter, that opened for Hayes Carll at the Cheatham Street Warehouse in San Marcos. Probably the biggest gig I've ever played. Huh, when was this? I saw Hayes at Cheatham Street awhile ago, maybe I saw ya playing. When I went it was primarily students in the crowd though, and he was playing with John Evans and this dude: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7ojzG9fRfc Anyways, here's some old Austin stuff that I'm amazed hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet. trem_two posted:Todd Snider is a legend. For anybody interested in getting into him, East Nashville Skyline and The Devil You Know are both masterpieces and would be the places to start in my opinion. I'm more partial to the East Nashville Skyline and afterwards era, but his entire catalog is worth exploring if you like what you hear. He's a great storyteller with his lyrics, and lets his smart-rear end sense of humor come through without veering close to novelty songs, which is what a lot of classic country from the 50s to the 70s was like too. Yeah he's fantastic and totally worth seeing live. He's straight up hilarious and manages to put that into his songs while, like you said, avoiding novelty. I chose a somewhat goofy example, here are some others. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0E-a88n8LCU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZWmbWrMwqo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLJJgehxfzs and I'll just tack this on since a great song and Snider does a good cover which I unfortunately can't find on 'tube. And this thread needs some Jerry Jeff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZDBXm11WXY Also here's a VERY young Steve Earle from the documentary Heartworn Highway, a good decade before he actually sold records. Guy Clark is also there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHE1dM4hYCw a bad enough dude fucked around with this message at 16:05 on Mar 20, 2013 |

Yeah, after Decoration Day I'd almost peg Pizza Deliverance/Gangstabilly as their second best stuff. It has a great country sound they let be overwhelmed by the Rock stuff after Southern Rock Opera became a break out, yet with a punk attitude. I love it all, but there's something really great about the first two. That said their album covers and names are just terrible. I ignored them for months while I was getting into the rest of their stuff because I assumed they were joke albums or something. The seriousness of the content doesn't match the names at all. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiDssEJxIno
