I'm a huge fan of The Band and a lot of the other groups previously named. So I'm glad I found this thread and a few new groups to listen to.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned some of the older folk troubadours. Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger were hugely influential on later singers and songwriters. Simple melodies, but some of their original lyrics were subversive as hell.

Incidentally, Rounder Records released a Woody Guthrie tribute album, New Multitudes, earlier this year that involves some more modern folk groups. Jay Farrar, Will Johnson, Anders Parker, and Yim Yames collaborate to put old unused lyrics to new music (a lot like the Mermaid Avenue records from Wilco and Billy Bragg). Not every track is a winner, but it's worth checking out. Especially if you like bearded guitarists. For example:
