I would like to recommend Javi Garcia and the Cold, Cold Ground, from New Braunfels, TX. The first record, A Southern Horror sounds like whiskey, knives, too many cigarettes and homemade drugs at sunset. That is a very accurate description, I promise you. Kind of like... a post-punk Ray Wylie Hubbard? Either way, he's brilliant, and I can't wait for his next record. This might be more "Texas Music" than "country music," but I figure it shares enough of the same DNA. http://www.thecoldcoldground.com/site/

Democratic Pirate posted:I've recently gotten into Corb Lund and Jason Isbell through Spotify and need to get into more of that type of music. I live in Texas so I should know more countryish stuff than I do. Corb Lund is very good (especially live). Check out Hayes Carll, who sang on Corb's "Bible on the Dash" and is quite fine in his own right. Two other great Texas musicians to check out if you're unfamiliar with them are Ray Wylie Hubbard, who just gets better and better with every record, and Javi Garcia & the Cold Cold Ground, whose A Southern Horror is quite fantastic (though it's a bit on the hard side at times).

New Ray Wylie Hubbard record's been out for a while. It's good - titled The Ruffian's Misfortune. I don't recall seeing it mentioned. The older he gets, the better he gets: it continues in the direction of the last few, and his son is playing guitar on it again.

invision posted:The new James McMurtry is also real good. Can't think of a song from it off the top of my head, but have a listen to one of his older songs: I feel for you. I've been exiled to DC for the last two years. I never thought I would miss the heat of Texas, but do I ever! I've always loved RWH's version of Choctaw Bingo - he makes it sound so sleazy.

Anybody like Nikki Lane? I caught her opening for Social Distortion last night, and was pretty impressed. I bought the records, but they don't come remotely close to the live show. Her band is very good.

I've been following it via his Facebook page. It sounds like they are hopeful. There's not a lot of health coverage in independent rock and roll, though, so his treatment has been funded via donations, if anyone wants to kick in a few bucks for a genuinely good guy.

I caught him at Billy Bob's Texas back in 2000, 2001 maybe? Phenomenal.

Apparently Hellbound Glory has just signed to Shooter Jennings' Black Country Rock: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10154990274931098 I'm looking forward to hearing a new record from Leroy/Leon Virgil Bowers (whatever he's calling himself this week). I've loved pretty much everything he's ever done.

me your dad posted:Not sure if anyone will know, but what the hell - They have been known to do one or the other or both. Hill Country is a nice venue - I saw Slim Cessna's Autoclub there a few months back. It's a small enough place that I'm kind of surprised, too. Since they just did a country tour to support the new record, this might be the rock show.

Fabulous band - I am very much looking forward to their new record. Also check out The eXcavators - it's Leroy on guitar/drum/vox and another gent on slide, recorded in someone's living room. Very good.

Lucid Nonsense posted:Eh, I don't get how they're gimmicky. Is it the way they dress? If so, I'd agree with that. I've just spent so long being disappointed with country music that to hear stuff like this is awesome to me. I don't know that I'd say gimmicky, per se. I think they're really skilled players, but I just don't think the songwriting is there yet.
