Been meaning to post this for a while. Each Sunday night from 5pm-8pm eastern WFPK hosts a program called Roots and Boots and it features quite a bit of new material. You can read about the guy who runs the program at http://www.louisville.com/content/rooted-roots-wfpks-michael-young-music

After this show is Sunday Night Bluegrass and features some pretty rare recordings.

If you are a fan of old Bluegrass and Country, Sunday night is a pretty good time to listen online to WSM as they play old shows from the Opry.

So lately I've been really getting into Buck Owens, specifically the era when Don Rich was in the band. A few years ago while going through Buck's tape library, they found a forgotten recording session from 1970. That session was the only solo album Don Rich ever recorded. It was released last year and man, is it ever good. The CD is all covers of George Jones hits and it sounds amazing. http://www.amazon.com/Sings-George-Jones-Don-Rich/dp/B00AJ3TOF0/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

quote:

Three decades after the record's original release, a group of country and country-influenced artists are reimagining Born in the U.S.A., covering its 12 songs with a reduced approach more influenced by that of the acoustic Nebraska, Springsteen's prior release. The full LP, titled Dead Man's Town, will be released on September 16th through Lightning Rod Records, but here you can listen to the album's opener, Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires' version of the iconic title track.

I may pick this up as the track list looks pretty interesting.

1. Jason Isbell & Amanda Shires, "Born in the U.S.A."
2. Apache Relay, "Cover Me"
3. Quaker City Nighthawks, "Darlington County"
4. Blitzen Trapper, "Working on the Highway"
5. Joe Pug, "Downbound Train"
6. Low, "I'm on Fire"
7. Holly Williams, "No Surrender"
8. Ryan Culwell, "Bobby Jean"
9. Trampled by Turtles, "I’m Goin’ Down"
10. Justin Townes Earle, "Glory Days"
11. Nicole Atkins, "Dancing in the Dark"
12. North Mississippi All-Stars, "My Hometown"

If you want to have a terrific Sunday night, do this:

Starting at 5pm EST, tune into wfpk.org (broadcastig from Louisville, KY) for Root and Boots http://tunein.com/radio/Roots-n-Boots-p1294/
At 8pm, you get a solid 3 hours of bluegrass and "old timey music"
From 11-12 is the Grateful Dead hour
After that, switch over to WSM to hear old Grand Ol' Opry recordings from the 40s, 50s and 60s.

Just got Jason Isbell's new album on vinyl. Godamn....I'm 42 years old and can't remember the last time I wanted to hear every track of a new double LP over and over again. Much less an artist that had an previous album I listened to over and over.

24 Frames is really heartbreaking when I read that he wrote that about knowing his wife was pregnant.

Seems that there was a printing error and the bass player credits were left off. Jason said on Twitter that those are the "collectable" versions.

Buck Owens

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYKVb7T1n2I

That steel guitar solo is considered THE song to play among slide players.

Buck pretty much invented the Bakersfield Sound and also was a one of the only successful country artists that didn't live or record in Nashville. Yes he's the guy from Hee Haw and his career tanked a little after that. More so when Don Rich (the tele player) died in 1974.

Buck also used the same band on the road as he did in the studio and they were tight as hell. Merle Haggard played bass for him briefly and came up with the Buckaroos name.

Alan Jackson released 'Chattahoochee' in 1992 for gently caress's sake. What a piece of poo poo song that was and it was 23 years ago. Same year as Achy Breaky Heart. Was 1992 the roping on the neck for modern country? Has it taken Don Henley 23 years to notice modern country has been on a long steady decline?

I wonder what Don Henley was doing in 1992?

Country music was in an odd state back then. Most of your big stars like Cash, George Jones, Loretta Lynn, etc. were putting out albums but got zero airplay. They had some luck showing up on various TNN shows but that was about it.

Then in 1995 Shania Twain 2nd album drops and that was the end of that.

I used to be in a band that played nearly every dive bar in Southern Indiana/Northern Kentucky. One night our lead guitar player bought an old band mate to sit in with us. The guy quit playing years ago because he had a really good job with the railroad and a few kids to take care of.

Anyway, this guy could sing just like Jon Anderson. If you closed your eyes you'd never know it wasn't the real thing. When we played Seminole Wind.... I have never, in my life, seen an entire beer joint suddenly silence themselves and look toward the stage.

Grrrrrrr. No idea when I typed Strat

Buck's autobiography is a pretty good read and you can really tell how devastated he was when Don died. If you look at Buck's performances after Don's death they just don't have the same feel, almost like he's just going through the motions. When he started playing with Dwight Yoakam a little bit that of spark came back.

Don was also a fiddle player

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6R8hgCx1xyQ

Buck owned and operated his own studio and tried to get Don to break out on his own as an artist but he was happier just playing in and leading the Buckaroos. Buck did convince him to record a few George Jones songs which they did and for some reason everyone forgot about it. These recordings were found while putting together an anthology.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CHEmLU4uBE

Fun fact: Merle Haggard briefly played for Buck and coined the term Buckaroos.
