My dad is a big folkie/old time musician and when I was a kid our family would go see these guys put on their Christmas/mid-winter shows. We also always listened to their records when we’d decorate our Christmas and drink egg nog. Even with the seasonal nostalgia I think these are some of my favorite English folk recordings. Just discovered Michael Hurley, just scratchin the surface so far but this song is an early standout for me. not sure how i'd never dug into him before, i've loved Yo La Tengo's cover of Griselda for years, but for some reason had never looked into the original https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NT4OqWAlbfw

I never realized Mermaid Avenue by Wilco & Billy Bragg is Woody Guthrie lyrics that had never been put to music before. Not a very consistent album, but has a few great songs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxzMbAMO73k https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwcQAlRn0Gs Sharks Eat Bear fucked around with this message at 17:04 on Jul 23, 2021 |

El Gallinero Gros posted:Volume II is the best one, IMO Cool, didn’t know there was a Vol II. Will check that out tonight Amazing how modern the lyrics feel, on at least some of the songs. I guess the exact date of when California Stars was written isn’t known, but Guthrie’s daughter thought it was probably the late 30s. I totally thought that it was written in the 90s by Bragg and Wilco til now!

poo poo, now I'm going down a HRM rabbit hole... I'd only really listened to Have Moicy! before but getting more into their earlier stuff and it's great, even with all the 60s west village goofiness it still captures the vibe of old time music perfectly https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qp6_WoxMHEQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8S2hCUVisg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PoL5s5KGO4 This thread on mudcat is also a great read, OP from 1999 and tons of awesome info about the band that you probably couldn't read anywhere else: https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=9245,9245

lsculpt23 posted:A question for the thread: does anyone have bluegrass recs similar to this? This isn’t really bluegrass, you need to be looking into old time and early American folk music. This harry smith anthology is a good starting point, lays out all the influences that spawned country music, bluegrass, folk revival/rock... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Qm3xAb7Iwk Here’s a few other random tunes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wGgvbHcgyc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eh3n6MqTGAg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfzwARs-QXI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhbR8Dgq3xk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9I4A6QO300 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwlOO8RG-og https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUrcustwdr4
