I'm going to the Tallest Man on Earth gig tomorrow. I dig his records, and he seems the kind of guy who would be great live, so I have high expectations. Doubt he'll match William Elliott Whitmore, though - I saw him a few months ago in London - Old Devils in particular blew the loving roof off the venue. He was the warm-up act to The Low Anthem along with Simon Felice, but nobody could come close: Low Anthem were beautiful, but not really trancedent, and I couldn't get into Simon's set at all, even though I like Felice Brothers (here's their Penn Station). Next month it's Lucinda Williams. What do you guys think of her latest record? I have played it a few times, but it's probably my least favourite of hers - quiet introspection seems to be the default setting here, and I don't think she does it as well as, well, anything else.

DRONES CURE HAJI posted:Not sure if this is the right thread, but what would some other bands like Trampled by Turtles and Old Crow Medicine Show be? I don't really like Mumford and Sons though. I've found that Carolina Chocolate Drops, The Devil Makes Three as well as some of The Felice Brothers' stuff scratch the same itch for me, but I'm also on the lookout for more stuff. When I went to Old Crow gig some months ago, they brought some local buskers on the stage for a rendition of "This Train" that was wonderfully chaotic. The buskers played outside after the gig as well, with people asking for "Wagon Wheel" and following them around whenever the police made them move on. Weed and whisky in the air, singer's voice shot to hell, visibly frozen fingers - it was great. Anyway, here are some more bands I've been into last year or so that I don't remember being mentioned in the thread before. Nothing really obscure, but eh. The Band of Heathens: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjrgTcyU3a0 (not entirely dissimilar to The Band) Timber Timbre: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irPIjJl4ByU (creepy swamp country sound) Dave Alvin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ym4kTfOEG4 (slow burning song that gets under your skin) Buddy Miller: http://youtu.be/qmSDxOWfIOM?t=2m (he's better known as a producer, but he's got some great songs himself) The legend that is Charlie Daniels: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bs4y5si8DGs (without a fiddle this time) Eileen Jewell was mentioned but without a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YaxnveOUdQ (apart from the aching sound watch out for her wonderful turns of phrase, too) John Mellencamp's latest is brilliant: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Rfi4BIvr-w And the greatest Russian 'folk' band Akvarium at their wildest: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcwcayA_PW0 I've only recently gotten into this sound and live far away from it all, so I don't really know which people everybody knows, but tried not to post the ones I presume everybody would know anyway. Any good blogs for country/americana/bluegrass? I'm partial to http://ninebullets.net/ myself.

Eel hovercraft posted:I've been on a massive Americana/alt-country binge as of late, but one record that really has stood out has been Brown Bird's Axis Mundi. I'm actually pretty surprised that it hasn't been mentioned in the thread! The album is utterly depressing and brutal to listen to, given the circumstances in which the songs were written/recorded, but also so, so very good. I don't think any album has hit me as hard as Axis Mundi in ages. Yeah, I've been digging them a lot, too, lately. They have a great fusion thing going with some funkier Eastern European-influenced tracks in the mix. 'Adolescence' and 'Patiently Awaiting' are probably my standout tracks. I've also been enjoying American Aquarium quite a bit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VJgR7RUuXs And Lucinda Williams has a fantastic version of Karen Dalton's unrecorded 'Met an Old Friend' out on the new tribute album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxCb0w1rarw

Alvarez IV posted:Is there any good psychedelic country music? Not psychedelic folk, I know about that stuff. I'm looking for something that sounds like it should be sitar but is really a zither. Ideally from the 60s or 70s, but I won't say no if it's modern, it's just more interesting to me if it came out back when country music was seemingly (not really) less experimental. Somehow I feel like it's going to be Jesus music but that's alright with me. this is a great list for that - it's a mixture of contemporary and earlier stuff, tho, and some of the records aren't very country (or very psychedelic): https://rateyourmusic.com/list/crunchytunes/best_psychedelic_country_rock_records/2/

So what is the album of the year for you all? For me it's a three-way between The Delines, Tyler Childers and Orville Peck, but Pony is probably the one that I've listened to the most of this year's crop, so I'd go with that if I had to pick just one.

I've been putting together a cosmic/psychedelic americana playlist over the last couple of years that some people have liked so I thought I'd post it here as well: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1hx23ul5aMql8u3Qm2QJHa?si=26525475fcdd47e8 It's mostly mellow country music-influenced tunes, a lot of slide guitar and such. And a lot of artists to explore further if you like a particular track (I tried to only have one song by each artist)
