I think it'd be great if they did a 30 for 30 on the Punch up in Piestany. In a nutshell, it was a world junior hockey game between Canada and the USSR which got physical and descended into a giant brawl when the refs lost control of the situation, ending only when the arena staff turned out the lights. Both teams were kicked out of the tournament, costing Canada a medal.

But within a few years, a small tournament had became one of the biggest (and most overhyped) events on Canadian TV. Without the controversy over this brawl, the IIHF world juniors aren't any bigger than any other junior hockey tournament.

To elaborate a bit, maybe a doc about people who choked at crucial moments and what it did to their lives/careers. Earnest Byner. Mitch Williams. Scott Norwood. Jean Van De Velde. Greg Norman. Leon Durham. Grady Little. The '99 Blazers.

If they really wanted to tell a messed up story about this, they could do one about Donnie Moore.

Didn't HBO do a documentary on that NC State team? I feel like I watched a documentary on them already, but I forget where. I'll watch this new one anyway.

Also, I didn't see this posted, but ESPN is doing a 30 for 30 spinoff called Nine for IX, a series of nine documentaries by female directors.

ESPN Media Release posted:

ESPN Films and espnW have announced the film slate for Nine for IX, a documentary series focused on captivating stories of women in sports told through the lens of female filmmakers. Nine for IX film topics include an intimate look at Pat Summitt, college sports’ most successful coach ever, the largely unknown history of Katarina Witt and her link with East Germany’s secret police, and the focus of sex in the marketing of female athletes. The series is scheduled to premiere on July 2 on ESPN and the films will air over consecutive Tuesday evenings at 8pm ET.
