instead of buying an mpc just try using another program or more synths ... native instruments poo poo is pretty cool or you can try to go 'native' and use all analog equipment with mpcs/sps which is what some people do i use fl studio but i might use my maschine i have just laying around here sooner rather than later

I can vouch for Maschine. I use it for pretty much everything now. Make the whole track in the stand alone software then throw it in Ableton for recording. Its the best of digital and hardware interfaces slapped together. And it finally has time stretch!

Your friend sounds like hes talking out of his rear end. Using an MPC won't inherently make your tracks sound better, and if you've been using FL for ~10 years you'll probably find they sound worse until you get a handle on the MPC workflow. The standard plugins for FL studio are a bit lackluster, but I still use them for >75% of my effects and synths. Sometimes getting "the sound you want" is a matter of knowing the techniques and effect settings involved, but other times its simply "Use Waves plugin X". As others have said, try out some other programs and maybe they will click better, but IMO FL studio only lacks in the live recording department.

Your friend is wrong. I bet he uses the term "in the lab" on a daily basis. No DAW has an inherent lack of sound. That lovely drum sample you use in fruity loops will sound lovely on an MPC. Lots of people say the same stuff about reason, that it lacks sonic quality. This is how you pick out people who don't actually know anything. I'm getting flashbacks of a conversation I had with someone where they proclaimed "no producer worth their salt uses firewire." This was one of those guys with a hard-on for analog, though. ugh Edit: are you saying you only use the VSTs that came with fruity loops? Throw this http://www.soundtoys.com/product/Decapitator on everything. Your track will sound so analogue, so warm and golden, it will basically be aural urine. the MPC vs Reason vs Ableton vs Cubase argument holds no water and any particular "sound" comiing from any of them is a result of the siignal handling by the engineer if you sample your drums hot directly from vinyl into an mpc, and your levels are cracking it is always goiing to sound better than some chintzy stock drums iin FL if you use one of those Platinum XXL edition drum kits in Reason its always goin to sound better than the built in 909 kit on the MPC the sound you get out at the end depends on how well you follow the rules from the inception of the beat to final mastering if you handle poo poo clean from point A you are going to have the possibility to end up with a better final output no platform is inherently better than another untiil you start to get a handle on it, once you prefer a platform iit is usually because you are able to get a defined result that you have shaped and eventually perfected

the reason ppl will think HARDWARE SOUNDS BETTER THAN SOFTWARE is b/c sampling hardware doesn't come with a bunch of lovely presets you bring in a drum hit from a professional recording and you're bringing in the sound of the compressor, the medium it's recorded on -- there's a lot more information there than just an 'instrument sound.' something sampled from a recording is ALWAYS gonna sound thicker and more full than an 808 sound you generate with a synth cuz it's already been through a mixing and mastering process thndr and everybody else is right, there is no inherent difference between how 1's and 0's are handled from one environment to another. there's a weird rumor about ableton's summing bus being 'inferior' but that is complete bullshit that makes no technical sense whatsoever and is generally repeated by people who just don't know how to mix their poo poo problem w/ making hip hop beats is that you have to be an engineer as well as a musician and 95% of 'good beats' is about sound-craft, not the actual notes you choose. lots of dudes kinda forget that when they move from 'instrumental music' to production and will expect that they can just hit a magical PRO BUTTON to make poo poo sound 'thick and loud' but that ain't how it works just keep practicing

Me and a long time friend of mine finally got together and started working on a track. So far this is what we got, he's gonna rap over it eventually, but he deleted his facebook and I don't have his email address so I have no idea how to get it to him ergh. I make sure I have the sample monitoring turned off. Its janky but it works. I'll put together the beat in the stand alone Maschine program and then save it. Then I'll open up Ableton and load the Maschine VSTi and route the separate Maschine instruments (or whatever they're called I can't remember) into different channels. And then I record and mix it. I do it that way since the workflow for it in Ableton is kind of hosed up. Pressing the "play" button wont do anything, neither will sampling internal audio. So Ableton is just there for recording. I've also been having issues lately with running VST inside Maschine so I've been avoiding that. I used to just do everything in Ableton but I like Maschine so drat much that I do everything with it now. Ableton's effects are pretty drat good out of the box and it just looks appealing, which is why I use it. And I'm using Windows 7.
