I'm trying to make a beat and I keep listening to "Power" and "Dark Fantasy" from Kanye and kicking myself because nothing I do sounds like that.

It's obviously dumb to compare myself to those beats, but I've been trying to dick around with drums for this song for like 3 days. Just the drums. Nothing sounds right, or sounds enough like "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" to keep.

Ugh.

Maybe I'm doing it wrong. I'm just laying out drums until something sounds right to me while listening to much better artists in the background for motivation. Once I get the drums in, it's a lot easier, but getting the drums in is the hardest part for me.

Damnnit Kanye, stop being so good.

I was making a beat in Ableton and was pretty pleased with the synth, so I decided to take a break and put my iPod on shuffle. I only then realized, after listening to it, that I had recreated the entire synth lead from Kid Cudi's "Day N' Nite" from scratch without even realizing it.

:suicide: Back to round one.

I was inspired by a Biggie Smalls mash-up so I made this to rap over. It's only the first version and I'm not sure where to go from here. I also just finished it like 5 minutes ago, so I'm prolly too close to it.

Any suggestions? I'm a newbie and have no idea what I'm doing.

EDIT: It's my birthday, happy birthday to me.

Cleaned it up a bit, redid the drum levels, and messed with the opening/added an ending.

I'm actually pretty pleased with it.

What do y'all think?

I'm trying to recreate the beginning sample of "Mercy" by Kanye West in Ableton, and it's driving me mad.

I'm sort of new in Ableton, so here's what troubling me. Any advice is appreciated.

I'm using the original sample.

1. Some parts of the original sample are shorter than in Mercy. "Well, it's a weeeeepin' and a moaaaanin'" isn't nearly as drawn out in the original sample and I can't figure out how to stretch those bits out.

2. It's much more sing-songy in Mercy, the voice actually rises and falls as if he were actually singing instead of just talking.

Those are the two big hang ups. Any assistance before I've pulled the last of my hair out?

Say what you will about Kanye West, he's definitely the most experimental mainstream hip-hop artist today. This is like straight up glitch-hop.

I have a long history of Disney samples. 808's seemed appropriate.

It's not bad it just seems really generic. I dunno, it doesn't jump out at me.

No problem. I mean, it wasn't bad, but I've heard a jillion indie rap songs that sound exactly the same and I have no way of telling them all apart. I dunno if that helps.

Thank you so much man! That means a lot coming from you. MF Doom is one of my favorite producers!

I use Ableton 8 and whatever neat plugins I can get my hands on.

The reason the drums are so low in the mix is, on a lot of Madvillainy songs, such as All Caps, I noticed that the drums seem to hit a lot lower than other hip-hop artists. I was experimenting trying to figure out how Madlib did it, but I obviously failed, hah. Could anyone provide some insight?

I also realize I mixed everything to low in general, so I definitely won't make that mistake again.

EDIT: I tried to mix it again, I hope it's a bit better this time!

what do you usually sidechain compress? I used to just sidechain compress almost everything but I realize I've prolly been overzealous with it.

Also, something that a few people said was that they felt like my samples weren't blending together. Could anyone provide some insight? I figured they meant that I should make my samples 'blend in' a bit more, but that's something I've been having a tough time doing. Hmm.

Thanks peeps. I think I've started to get the hang of mixing and making it sound nice, but I'm having trouble with song structure still. The openings are pretty neat, but after that, it's basically just a repeating drum-loop. I love Kendrick's Backseat Freestyle, which is pretty repetitive, but doesn't seem tedious at all. It just makes you wanna groove. I need to get on that poo poo.

Also, since the year is almost through, I just wanna post the first (and one of my favorite) tracks from one of the best hip-hop releases of the year, Acid Rap. Open discussion and analysis is encouraged!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftSUchAdVTE

I really like his use of the backing vocals and piano chords to evoke a very 'soul' or 'jazzy' vibe, which the whole album is drenched in. I'm sure someone can phrase that more elegantly than I.

Also, love the fact he put it up online for free. I'm really liking that shift in music culture.

I haven't really been in the right state of mind (holidays) to produce much of anything, so I've been taking the week to completely sort and arrange my sample library in a neat and tidy fashion, plus add a bunch of new stuff.

Hey fellas! So I've been lurking for quite some time now, and I figured I might as well throw some beats out there because I can't dwell in my basement forever if I ever want to produce something good.

So I present to you : some weird weird poo poo ala Tyler I guess (the voice won't be there in the final version), chill raw stuff, I don't know what I was thinking, depressing thingy that I need to work on some more, trap/chill thingy, I don't know if I should continue working on it.

I've been working on those lately, trying to find my sound, but I also have those two old tracks that I think sound quite good and that some rappers might be interested in : https://soundcloud.com/liddell/wakashitest-wip that I rejected at first because it's more of a remix (I feel like I'm lazy as gently caress whenever I use extensive sampling), and it's also one of my first beats (1-2 years old), and this one https://soundcloud.com/liddell/reims-n-cropole-beat-sisi in which I used next to no sampling, and I love the way it sounds (I've tried to rap on it but I'm the worst, and it's in french)

Most of those reek of :effort: when it comes to mixing/mastering. I can't be bothered to spend hours on end working on the sound if I don't know where it's headed, I just like to throw a couple patterns and see where it goes. Soundcloud makes them sound like rear end anyway.
Anyway, leave a message here (or on soundcloud) if anybody's interested in rapping or for a collab, that'd be just swell. I'll be working on some trap/electronic stuff down the line, I think.
