My father was in the Air Force for some time and met quite a few folks who ended up being things like Sargeant Sargeant, Major Majors, etc. He too encountered a Captain America, although unceremoniously. The real topper, though, was the Canadian Master Sargeant. Canadian convention for that rank gives you the (otherwise awesome) title "Master", except this poor guy's name was Bates. He wasn't bothered by it, but the secretaries didn't like to page him, and one would try to page Sargeant Bates instead, only to get chided by Master Bates for not using his correct title. I think some folks tried to get him promoted as a way of "fixing" it... The best I ever saw in my own experience was a Mr. Gaylord W. Hurlbut.
