When I was in Thailand, everyone has a short nickname. The kids in class had nicknames like Mint, Ice, Sprite, etc. That's how they were spelled in English though, when they pronounced them it sounded different. They had these nicknames because their first names were a lot longer (and funnier) to foreigners. Particularly Titiporn.

In another job here in the US I saw some really awful names for kids. Noisivelet (yes, that's "television" backwards). The worst was a poor kid, I can't remember if it was a girl or a boy. Last name was Kane (or Cane), and the first name was something like Coe (or Ko). They always used the middle initial when addressing the kid, but it's still very unfortunate. I can't remember if we alerted the authorities or not.
