It was bring your kid to work day today and I thought it would be good to bring the toddler. She definitely charmed the pants off everyone, but oof. She loved the office cow statue though.

Nothing quite like working a 60 hour week while going back and forth between a sick, miserable toddler who’s only doing so-so at potty training and a sick, miserable, pregnant wife who has no patience for potty training and is upset he isn’t done after 6 days

My 3 year old unspooled the toilet paper and, when the mess was found, proceeded to blame it on the cats. Bub, don’t drag Pompom into your house crimes.

I didn’t fully appreciate how much ground a kid can cover until the 1yo decided to take a stroll while eating a crumbly granola bar. House was immediately covered in crumbs.

Also those baby nail grinders are pretty helpful for keeping the claws dull. You still need to keep on top of it, which is just one of many sisyphean tasks of parenthood. As far as the scratches themselves go, at least in our two at that age they always heal pretty quickly, but whatever petrolatum based goop you're using (vaseline, aquaphor, etc) helps protect the cuts while they heal.

I second this recommendation. We have some no name Amazon one (Fansidi or something?) and it works great. A lot better than trying to use clippers or a hand file. KG3 mainly tolerates it. I think I grind down his claws every third day

My 5 year old makes a giant mess trying to do the toothpaste himself. Of course, my kids are also very particular about what flavor of toothpaste I buy. Any suggestions on something I can use to help make it not such a disaster in my bathroom?

After I wash my kids I wipe down the vanity with the damp washcloth to get the toothpaste and hand soap up. If your kids don’t get in the bath every night, maybe just keep a quick-drying rag handy on a lil hook to wipe things down with. It’s not a particularly gross/dirty mess so it can get reused a bit before tossing in the hamper. I’ve leaned into having basic cleaning supplies at hand in any kid-heavy room and it’s made a big difference.

My ~19mo son just finished his first month of preschool! He lost the second due to the flu, but surprisingly we made through two weeks before he got sick again. He never actually stopped coughing or sneezing, but it seems a little worse today so guessing we're on a new one. At least it's not flu because he still seems pretty okay. They sent us a vocabulary list since it's a Spanish Immersion preschool, but they really don't tell me much about how he's doing other than that he's doing great. One of the two teachers I haven't really heard speak English, so I can ask in Spanish but haven't tried to engage much yet. I never really know how much I should be asking about his day other than if it was good/bad. I ask him every day, and he only says "kids play cars" EVERY single time we ask what he did at school that day. He actually seemed kind of annoyed when my wife asked yesterday. They did post a recent picture on Facebook, and I was SO proud to see my little escape artist sitting during a lesson and even standing in a line for a picture. He generally seems happy when he goes and returns from school. This week he's also said that teacher's name and "hugs" and "piano", but for some reason also feo and gordo? We aren't sure we heard that right. I asked in the thread about summer school (since this school takes summer off) and we ended up enrolling him, if only to give my mother-in-law a break when she comes back to help care for him. But he seems to enjoy being around other kids, so I think it was the right move. Meanwhile though, we also got sick (though not as extreme) for over a week. And I'm hoping most of what will hit us from daycare illnesses isn't as bad, because it sucks to work your job through all that while your kid is at home.

Went to our first festival today. Lots of rookie mistakes to learn from. Basic poo poo like not getting two balloon animals so of course the 1yo stole it and untwisted it when the 3yo was distracted by the petting zoo.

Welp fifth disease (aka slapped cheek) is going around at my kid's preschool and it looks like I won the lottery. She got that "red butterfly on the cheeks" thing yesterday and has been feeling perfectly fine the whole time, doesn't even itcu apparently, and from what I'm reading by the time it shows up it'll be the last symptom. So she got to be one of those cases that are asymptomatic for the parts that actually matter like fever and such. Now the question is whether they'll let her go in after the weekend. Apparently it's not infectious once the rash shows up but facilities can understandably be overcautious about this stuff. My wife is away and I have a ton of poo poo to do so if they say no I'm kinda hosed.

What’s a good travel car seat for 1-2 year old? We’ve got one of those bomb rotating Nuna REVVs which is great for everyday use but I’d rather not take that flying. I’m looking at one of the Graco Extend2Fits so if it gets destroyed during airplane travel/check-in I’m not as concerned, but are there other options other goons recommend?

Pretty well rated safety-wise, only weighs like 7 lbs, and is only like $60. We have a Graco Extend2Fit as our main, and it’s like 25 pounds and no goddamn way is that fitting in a coach airline seat. We’ve got a flight coming up in a month we’re gonna order a CARES harness for. Our now-nearly-3yo kicked the poo poo out of the seat in front of her last flight from her car seat, so we’re hoping the CARES gives us enough space so she can’t do that. And then we’ll gate check the Scenera for car use at the other end.

I have a cares harness. It was kinda useful for a sec, but my skinny kids could just slither out from under it which they discovered on like their second time in it so I kinda gave up after that.

Big storm rolled through this morning and we assumed the kids slept through it because the hatch was quiet. Wrong - the hatch wasn’t rotating rooms even though it was set to scan mode. The 3yo was in a terrible mood all morning until eventually telling us it was because she thought we forgot about her when she was scared

I enjoy how kids will sometimes, accidentally, say something with perfect comedic timing. My son walked into my room this morning with binoculars and said, “with binoculars I can see you from far away.” Then he puts them up to his eyes the wrong way, and says, “see, you’re far away.”
