So... I just decided to look in to the Navy Reserve because my job sucks and learning something new seemed good. I got a 97/99 in the test today. I dont even know were to begin to narrow down what I should look at. So my question is... Is anybody unhappy with a field they went into? Anything I should pass up as full of poo poo even if it sounds good? I'm considering MA due to some police academy schooling but thats about all I got so far. Not interested in anything HSLD/combat oriented. I'm giving some sort of trade be it electrical or mechanical a thought as something that would help me outside.

I.... I dont think I could pass a IS ssb due to my bio father being a piece of poo poo that at least got a green card when he married my mom and we have no idea after that once he took off. HT, UT, MA, HM are on my list to ask more questions about.

I got all my paperwork in and just waiting for my physical on Friday. If I meet the background stuff for security I may have to really look hard at the cyber stuff. How tough are the schools for that? Do they start at an high school level of understanding or right off the bat more advanced? I got a 97/99 so apparently I got some options.

Well I passed my physical with one exception. I got 20/20 vision in both eyes with normal color vision and depth perception but since I got LASIK (in 2005) didn't bother to keep records) they want their own doctor to inspect my eyes. Easy enough. The guy in charge of financial waivers drove me loving nuts with his badgering on how much money my wife, a homemaker raising twins, brings to the table. He wouldn't tell me how much he wanted to see in my savings until he finally slipped up and said three times my monthly bills. Was that so hard? My mother in law had pledged her support in a waiver but worded it "whatever she needs" instead of numbered amount so that bounced back too. Once again he wouldn't straight up tell me what he wants to the differential to be so I had to play the guessing game until he said that was good enough. What the hell... So now I need rewritten statement from my mother in law pledging a 2k a month allowance while I'm at boot. Called up my mother in law to tell her about the rewrite. No problem on her part and she's wiring 20k to our account to sit their and be used until I get back and so I can get a statement showing more savings. Thanks mom.

Well my dependent waiver for three got accepted and the last thing they want is proof of finances. Got to print out a bank statement showing my savings and checking. This seems like a lot of effort to join the navy reserves. Oh well.

Goddamn... My final waiver just got kicked back. They want proof of my wife making money under the table babysitting children for a princely sum of $200 a month. 9k cash in the bank 2k in our checking House value 500k with a 150k mortgage ...... And my whole application rests on proof of my wife making $200 a month under the table. What the gently caress navy?

The whole police thing didn't work out and the armored car industry was a dead end. I'm in good shape, the family life is stable and there's a huge market for system admins with clearance. I'll be making about the same money or slightly more than what I'm currently pulling while away at school. Also I don't know of a single high school peer retiring from the military because the combat vets all separated early due to injuries and PTSD and the one officer I know of left way early. Actually I have one peer who can retire from the coast guard in five years but he's the only one I know of.

It's a separate agency called OPM. How large is large when dealing with magic money? My mother in law routinely gives us chunks (10k or less) of cash to help with our children's tuition. Godholio posted:It depends on the guy reading your paperwork. If it's easily explained, I wouldn't expect much of a problem. Clearance stuff isn't like getting prison waivers and poo poo...it's completely separate from the enlistment/accessions process, so the fact that the services are tightening up on people and getting competitive doesn't make a big difference. A few years ago, as long as you didn't have a murder or too many rapes on your record you could get in with little hassle. Now even one rape is too many, unless you're commissioning into the Air Force. But there's no real difference in how clearance checks are performed and approved/denied. It's not a weeding out process. I was part of the system for SCI clearance paperwork for a while, and when something weird came back we just had to get a letter from the individual explaining the issue and forwarded it on. I think I did that for like 18 months or so and at least 80 people...and only TWO people were ever denied access. One for an undisclosed issue (he retired shortly after, and I assume they two were related) and the other because his wife was from I think Russia. Oh cool that sounds easy enough because it's all legit with a paper trail.

But yeah, nobody is going to take a straight out of initial training reservist with no other experience, short of say, linguists. There are a lot of jobs in the Bay Area, CA for beginning IT people with security clearance. Most will train you for the specific job. The pay isn't outrageous and baby sitting servers isn't glamorous but it's a hell of lot better than retail.
