taibbi mentally reads like a person who could make a solid living off of right wing grift but he just does this for free out of some kind a main character syndrome

skeleton warrior
Nov 12, 2016

Taibbi’s conversion is 100% because he got called out for writing misogynistic bullshit in the early 2000s and rather than conduct any introspection and maybe change and grow from it, he decided that Cancel Culture is 100000000% the biggest threat to anyone ever and that anyone who opposes left cancel culture must be a hero.

https://www.reuters.com/article/idUSKBN1CX0QB/

Like, read how Taibbi assigns “power” in that interview and it’s not the corporations or the ultra-rich he railed against previously, it’s “schools” and “universities” and “newspapers”: i.e., the students and journalists who are the stereotypical userbase of Tiwtter and who called him out for writing lovely sexual harassment fantasies.

Edit: to Staluigi’s point, it’s why he acts like he has main character syndrome: because he sees being called out for being a lovely person as a direct and dangerous threat to himself and so he’s on Team MAGA not because he thinks he can grift, but because they’re not going to cancel him, and so he’ll twist his logic however he needs to justify to himself that he’s on a moral crusade.

It's a problem for a lot of left-ish male journalists who came up in the early aughts. They were right about one thing - the horror show of the American imperial war machine and the post-9/11 surveillance state it enabled - but then when people called them out for having lovely opinions about things like race and gender, they ran screaming into the arms of the right wing where they could keep talking about the Bell Curve.

You don't even need some interview to see what a piece of poo poo Taibbi is now. The man, in his mewling whining to Elon Musk to talk to him again, released private IMs where he openly states to Musk he has run interference and buried information he found on Musk to instead focus on the twitter files as Elon wanted it to be written to attack democrats and The Left for free. He's openly unmasked himself as a shill who gladly eats the poo poo of the alt-right as long as it means he gets something cushy in return.

Harari is one of Alex Jones's current crop of supposed globalist masterminds, and Taibbi ran cover along with Glenn Greenwald for a fawning puffumentary on Jones ("Alex's War") back in 2022, so it's not surprising he's absorbed some of that horseshit..

Is he getting the ire of the left? I've literally never heard of him other than Taibbi mentioning him and Taibbi isn't on the left, and a quick Twitter search pretty much only brings up that and Alex Jones types screaming at the (((Globalist))) WEF coming to make you eat bugs in terms of complaints

Yeah I've not heard any actual left criticism on him, it's mostly just Infowars-esque Great Replacement/depopulation nonsense.

Maybe you could work up some socialist critique if you wanted as he has spoken at the World Economic Forum, but what he's actually said and done is emphatically not why Jones, Taibbi et al go after him.

If I saw a leftist saying they hate Harari without expounding on why, I'd assume it's to do with him being an Israeli liberal of the "Israelis and Palestinians must live side-by-side in mutual respect for each others' traumas and errors" variety, who immediately after 10/7 was among the broader Israeli left making statements about how the international left's failure to condemn the Hamas attack was a profound betrayal of human decency.

I love how people have talked themselves into believing literal Bronze Age superstitions about celestial phenomena, but I think it's worth noting one important point: this could never actually happen to ancient peoples, because they didn't understand eclipses and therefore couldn't predict them ahead of time. And to be fair, seeing the Sun get blocked out with no idea what's going on, would be sort of scary!

But we know exactly how and why and when these things happen now. It can't be an omen if you can predict it! That's against the whole point of omens!

The real one has nothing to do with "monster" faces. People with the disability simply can't distinguish between faces at all, thus it appears that everyone has the same face. They learn to use other cues to distinguish between people. Like hair, piercings, height, build, clothing, voice, etc.

What that has to do with an eclipse, I have no idea.

We all looked at the sun before totality, even those of us in the path of totality, because of course we all wanted to see if there was a noticeable difference.

Turns out that the warnings are right and you can't look directly at it until complete coverage.

EXISTENCE IS PAIN😬
Not sure if it's a broadly reactionary thing or a just Twitter thing, but lately I've been reading a lot, and I mean a LOT of arguements about the genetic significance of intelligence (ie smarter people have smarter kids). Reactionaries are claiming that pushing back against this is a form of science denialism.

Besides the obvious racist implications, it also paints a broad bioessentialist picture that conservatives frequently make about society-that various traits that you have and how you fit into society are virtually set in stone by birthright, be it intelligence, sex/gender, criminality, political values, etc. It all falls within very rigid binary definitions; you're either Black or White, smart or stupid, conservative or progressive. It's also probably why (online anyway) they're so fixated on Physiognomy.

And in another example of "the contradictions are the point" these conservatives will simultaneously believe in this type of bioessentialism but also the idea that everyone is a detached unique individual entirely responsible for their own destiny. You have to bootstrap your way to success, but some people are just naturally superior to others! There's no substitute for 'hard work' aside from superior genetic lineage! Smart people are more moral than dumb people but you can't trust those ivy league eggheads who are implementing marxism in society!
