Recently had reason to hang out with an old regressive buddy of mine that considers himself an intellectual heavyweight. He started talking about how cool it was that he could watch videos by intellectuals on YouTube and I was like "motherfucker you're talking about Jordan Peterson, aren't you". Yes.

Nearly fell off my chair laughing when yes, of course he was also referring to Ben Shapiro. But even he realized that interview was a bad look.

I really do believe that they’re lying to themselves en masse and don’t realize how hollow and obvious their self delusions are to everyone else.

People seem to be arguing "the specific words Trump said weren't racist, so what's the big deal?"

Were they arguing in good faith one could point out that the letters of the alphabet aren't inherently racist but the order they appear in can make racist words but, alas

I've definitely run into "intellectual heavyweights" who were completely mystified by my ability to point at the quiet part they were actually arguing, so you're not wrong, but dogwhistles aren't obvious to people that aren't familiar.

I’m not actually sure about that, at least in the long term. Actively resisting the far right in the streets is good, but in Nazi Germany it didn’t work.

It's not enough to merely "actively resist" being the takeaway.

In fact, the first two decades of the 20th century saw an ongoing campaign for earlier Christmas shopping. American professor Paul Collins has shown how socialist activists – including Florence Kelley, co-founder of the NAACP – fought to free overworked and often under-aged shop workers from the terror of the Christmas rush, which they portrayed as a humanitarian disaster. “Thousands of workers in every city have been taught by bitter experience to look forward to Christmas with dread,” said the Consumer League of New York. “A very little unselfishness on your part will greatly lighten [their] burden.” Sensing opportunity, savvy merchants climbed on board, and by 1918 the movement had been co-opted to such an extent that Santa Claus was telling the public to shop early for the sake of the war effort.

More general public appeal, sure? But Alex Jones has just kept going and stoking the flames.

I'm watching this most recent AJ output and he unironically cites a Natural News article regarding Marines being activated for work within the US (clearly within the purview of naturalnews.com, that, but they've got plenty of front page articles in the right wingnut spectrum)

there are people who believe the things he says and Beck never appealed as much to the truly dangerous.

I am not nor have I ever been a fan of professional wrestling. Don't listen to the "hard C" cinema elitists. Politics is a showman's game and wrestling is reality.

It turns out that the "right to lie because it's an entertainment channel court case" thing isn't accurate. But right now I can't find the video of the dude yelling "Fox lies! Fox lies!" at the dude holding a Fox Business microphone who basically said "no, see, I'm with Fox Business" while being live broadcast on Fox News.

I'll post it later if/when I find it.

there's a TYT video that cuts off for some reason right as they're getting into the "no this is Fox Business actually" part

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIHkpMtJ0dI&t=23s

unfortunately every result from how i'm searching is just a thumbnail of one talking head or another instead of the actual context

fuckin finally found it

"This is Fox Business Network, just FYI" he says, while live on Fox News

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ry4vRz8Vvms&t=36s

Context: Madison, Wisconsin 2011

I'll acknowledge that it happened much earlier in the interaction than I remembered. I remembered it as the mouthpiece saying it to the dude yelling truth and a specific change in inflection in the way he said "FOX LIES" immediately after (which still happened as i remembered but in a different context)

wishful thinking perhaps, but that was an element of that report summarily/deliberately ignored in favor of "articulate lib lol"
