Hey, bird bros / broettes! I've been trying to clicker train my four month old cockatiel since the day I got it (a bit over two weeks ago). I ended up coming across a pretty good set of books by Ann Castro. I believe she's a bird behavior consultant, and I particularly enjoy the format of her books. I've given Clicker Training and More Clicker Training a skim, and I've recently started working through Clicker Training with my bird. One of the best tips she offered, in my opinion, involves making a training log. With it, you can keep track of behaviors you desire from your bird, what progress was made during any given training session, and what should be worked on in the next session. Sometimes I wonder if I'm making this much more complicated than it needs to be. Anyway, try to get the digital versions. It's tons cheaper than the printed ones. http://www.thebirdschool.com/shop/ Also, here is a dumb video of me getting preened by my sassy bird. :> http://www.flickr.com/photos/kiwisaotome/8136503804/

I have dumb food related questions for y'all. For those of you who already have their birds on pellet-based diets, what brands are you feeding them? Also, if your bird had to be transitioned to a diet, how did you handle it? I tried softening the pellets, which just ended up making a mess. I also tried mixing a cockatiel specific seed supplement with the pellets (1/4th seeds, 3/4th pellets). I know for a default to try to go for all natural pellets (natural preservatives, natural flavoring, etc). Right now, I'm converting my bird being converted to Higgins InTune pellets, and I'd like to know if there's any other brands I should try / avoid. I wish there was a way to just get samples, but after looking around online on other bird forums, it seems that a lot of companies aren't really receptive towards giving out samples anymore. When I originally adopted my bird, the previous owner had it eating Kaytee Fiesta Max. I don't know if it's just me, but I think it smells pretty terrible, and I can't possibly imagine a bird eating terrible smelling things. Also, what's up with those Nutriberries? That stuff smells great, even the hybrid pellet / seed version. Sometimes I wonder if some of this bird food tastes as good as it smells.

This looks like a viable alternative to those bird tents: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=5059+8472+17999&pcatid=17999

I have a question about poop and poop accessories. When y'all hang out with your birds, how do you manage the constant pooping that goes on. It happens, and I'm having a hard time trying to figure out a way of training my bird to poop in designated areas (like not on my hands or monitor). I do have a clicker, and he responds to it fairly well, but when it comes to poop training he simply doesn't give a gently caress. Also, do any of you have experience with the Aviator leashes or flight suits? How easy was it to get your bird to become familiar and comfortable with them? What was the training process like for you? As an aside... Have some cockatiel cuteness. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kbzsU7IY6w Sharizard fucked around with this message at 17:50 on Apr 25, 2013 |
