For some reason, The F Plus is the only podcast that Apple Podcasts doesn't sync the plays between my phone and computer. Thus, after having listened to the latest episode, I'll often get on my computer and see it listed among my unplayed episodes. Which is a nice little bit of encouragement to listen to the new episode again. And I'm glad I did, because on my first listen I missed the way the "wank! wank! wank! wank!" chant was mixed into the closing song.

You know, when I was growing up I lamented how youth-targeted media like MTV seemed to create these ridiculous, artificial categories for kids to identify with. It was so transparently phony, and so clearly meant to get kids to buy stuff through their need to identify. Now, seeing what happens when children don't have any giant corporate media hand guiding them, I think the way it used to be was better.

Also, it was very funny realizing about halfway through that all the "<blank> Academia" genres were just a way for its (theoretical) adherents to admit that they wanted an aesthetic but they were still in high school.

Also also, the whole panel not knowing a thing about the whole PMAB/"Pick Me" discourse was so nice. It was like going back in time to before a major tragedy and seeing people just living their lives, unaware of the doom that awaits them.

Good, sissies are creepy as hell and should be left in the past :colbert:

I ran across the site NiteFlirt recently and considered making a doc on it, before seeing that a doc on that site was submitted and ended up becoming an Extra Credit episode. The site is clearly aiming at an actual-boomer demographic (one operator's bio described herself, in TYOOL 2021, as "a mixture of Bettie Page and Jenna Jameson"). As a result of the site's demographics, there is a genuinely-upsetting amount of homophobia, transphobia, and racism all over it. Having only encountered sissy content in FPlus episodes, combing through the stuff that is out there in the wild was kinda depressing.

The dragon usenet F Plus episode was honestly a bit sweet. Just early-internet ridiculousness that made me a touch nostalgic. (Also, Lemon’s “the mountain really came to Mohammed there” riff was excellent.)

I’m really confused by the latest Extra Credit short. I can’t tell if this was someone lying for clout or what. On the one hand, those student comments were spot-on for what you see in graded online class discussions. On the other hand, I would think a professor would be smart enough to not repost students’ work to Reddit.

I forget who but some podcaster I listen to made the observation that in fiction where vampires are real, people are weirdly aggro when explaining the rules of the universe to the uninitiated("Now of course garlic and running water stops them, but not crosses or silver bullets you DIPSHIT, you MORON, why would you even THINK that would work") even though there's no way they'd have any inkling, given that they thought vampires were fake. This appears to be how at least the Reddit Magick community works, except instead of one person explaining the rules rudely to a different person, it's like 500 people who all have different rules and think you'd have to be an idiot to accept any rules but theirs.

In vampire fiction it makes some sense, on a meta-textual level, as these aggro rule explanations are the authors' way of saying "gently caress those other vampire stories". Kind of like how movies will sometimes insert posters or billboards from other movies that the filmmaker dislikes so that they can be defaced or destroyed in some way.

As for why the redditors are doing it to each other, I don't know if it's a case of trying to imitate that fiction or them needing to be extremely insistent to help convince themselves that they are right.

I was writing a comment up here about the whole manufactured, reality-tv drama aspect of this channel before y'all got to it at the very end of the episode. It feels like that has become an aspect of any channel aimed at teenagers now. Like, you can't just have a peek into the life of the person/people behind the channel, that peek also has have all kinds of salacious drama.

Also, doing some back-of-the-napkin math, even assuming a lower-than-average CPM, this kid is pulling in $25k-$75k per video. And he's uploading at least 2 videos a week.

ShellGame, thread, can I pick your brain about how to write a doc that's basically a transcription of a comic?

I mean, having done some transcriptions but never a doc, my advice would be to write it out a bit like:

Character A: line
Character B: line
<narration/action>
Character A: line
Character B: line

Then put the comic away so you only have the script you've written, record yourself reading the lines/narration, and listen back to it (still without the comic anywhere around) to see if what you are hearing conveys the thing in the comic that is worth writing a doc about.

Also, on another note, ever since hearing the last Extra Credit episode, I keep getting "Black Yoshi" stuck in my head to the tune of Saul William's Black Stacey.

A steady release schedule that results in everyone getting burnt out and not having fun would be much worse than the current release schedule. Only making an episode when 1) there is a good doc, and 2) there are enough people available who want to read seems like one of the biggest keys to how the show has stayed so good for so long.
