If you're in one of the preferred rental deals where you can jump in a car with your name already on it and drive off, you have another ID that you can fast-talk a rental company security guy at the gate with, and feel lucky with regard to getting pulled over, you can finesse it. But I wouldn't count on that.

I'd use taxis, get on the internet, and see what it takes to get a new one issued. If you have to go to the DMV you're boned but if they'll mail it to your house you can do that and pick it up next time you're home or have someone get into your mail and send it to you.

Don't worry, it's not just commuter airports.

Ran into the same thing at SLC trying to catch a 6:15 flight. Security opened at 5:30 and there were something like 4 or 5 early 6am flights all trying to get through security at the same time. It was wonderful.

This happens with first flight of the day pretty much everywhere.

Security lines are a needless hang anyway; the airport operators know when the planes are leaving and how many people are supposed to be on each plane. They can estimate that people will be coming through security 60-120 minutes before that time. They can pass the anticipated loads to TSA, who can schedule the appropriate number of screeners to meet anticipated demand. The only time this would break would be if 100% of the screening lines were in use and they still weren't meeting demand; then it's time for more security stations and/or LET'S USE THE METAL DETECTORS! But no, let's have routine 45-minute waits at Dulles with 3/4 of the lines never in use.

The whole thing is as close to a completely known problem as you're likely to find in the real world and yet they still gently caress it up.

Edit for grammar.

United and company just can't get their poo poo together much of anywhere. Miami is terrible and Dulles is loving inexcusable given how much traffic it sees (the contrast between the C/D concourses that belong to United and the A/B concourses that everyone else uses is comparable to Miami).

You might check with Staff A for guidance; even if the customer decides end the contract there is probably still some time before the end of the period of performance. At the very least Staff A should have had a provision that ensured any of their employees who were traveling would be covered by the Corp/Staff A contract until the end of their travel. Though that doesn't preclude Corp or Staff A calling you home early and ending it that way.

I am definitely a special case right now (this is first time they've done a trip like this. Honestly you'd think they would just hire me on at this point but the way this Corporation works that is not a possibility, positions are opened independently by some other higher-up).

I don't know if ending the trip early is a possibility even, I was sent since there is a shitload of work that needs done. If anything, they might fly me back early, 'end' the trip, get me rehired, begin a new trip under new agency. I don't carry my SSN card on me either (which is required by law as part of the hiring process) so they might fly me back for that anyway.

I'm sure going to love checking out of hotel, checking in my rental car early, having to adjust my rental car expense to pay the difference back, flying across the country, grabbing a drat piece of paper and turning it in to work, then flying again, get a cash advance to get a new car rental, then check back in to hotel. Then wait 3 weeks for my 'first paycheck' again. Ughh

Better that than stay for the duration of the trip, stop being paid your salary by Staff A halfway through, then come back to find that Corp won't reimburse you for the travel expenses or pay you for the time you spent working for them, which is a very real outcome if you don't find out what the deal is here.

You really need to be making a bunch of phone calls and get something sent to you in writing via FedEx or certified mail or something once a decision maker at one of the two companies decides how to handle it. Depending on the exact wording of the contract between Staff A and Corp you are potentially in a very vulnerable position here.

Is there such a thing as a checkpoint friendly bag that can carry two laptops?

It doesn't need to carry a huge amount of other stuff - chargers, mouse, kindle, and the folder I keep my receipts from my current trip in would be plenty, though I wouldn't say no to more space. I prefer a backpack, but I'll use a shoulder bag in a pinch.

Every nice checkpoint friendly bag I've seen only holds one laptop in a nice protected checkpoint friendly space, and having to take out two laptops + take off my shoes whenever I fly, plus emptying my pockets means I'm the rear end in a top hat in line with four bins getting stared at everytime I fly.

That's me too, my record is 5 bins. Just do it and don't give a gently caress; I find I'm often much faster unloading into my 5 bins than most people are into their 1 or 2. It helps if you stack the bins on top of each other once they're loaded so you're not hogging table space and then unstack them to feed into the X-ray.

If you're charging it to the customer's contract knock yourself out I guess; I won't refuse a no cost upgrade but I will never expend a resource (money, miles, regional upgrade) on a first class seat when I can use that resource for literally anything else.

I end up with that problem to a lesser degree; if I could choose to keep it on one airline I'd be top level and then some. As it is I'm stuck spreading it out across United and American with the occasional Delta or Jetblue thrown in for laughs. But the point is it's not a way to get around the fee. Any situation in which you can gate check a bag is a situation in which you don't need to check a bag in the first place.

It's nice if you've got a long layover and they'll check it through for you and you didn't want to haul it all day; board late and roll the dice, sure. But it's just flat out not valid advice to people concerned about the cost of checked luggage.

It's no trick at all to bring more stuff through the TSA horseshit than the gate will let you actually carry onto the airplane, though the gate staff will sometimes try to charge you for the checked bag at that point. Depending on your feelings toward haggling you can get that fee waived. It's worth the twentyfivebux to me not to do that but the option is there if you want that real cheapskate thrill.

What would you do if you had to spend your own money - get a hotel and catch a shuttle? One way rental? Taxi?

I'd like to get back to Bloomington ASAP if possible since I fly into IND from FRA on Monday night, and fly back out to leave for a 3 month internship the following Saturday, so I kind of wanna sleep a little and pack.

The easy answer is "beg ride from friend" but if that's not available, in order I'd explore:

- dump your car somewhere near airport with free or cheap parking, taxi to retrieve it when you return
- check all the car rental places that have offices in Bloomington for one-way rates
- cheap hotel followed by cheap shuttle the next day
- taxi is distant last because you'll get hit hard for a 50-mile ride if the cab will even go that far
