If need to scan things on the road like I need to scan things on the road, this guy is liquid sex. I've never been so awed by a piece of technology.

BTW, we should have meet-ups like goons who live in a single place do. I have to imagine there is a huge overlap in terms of our territory.

As for favorite airports, how has John Wayne not gotten enough love? When I was in Kindergarten, I wanted to be a teacher-scientist-astronaut-beekeeper. I've managed to nail two of those on my own and goons are convincing me to make sure my girlfriend can 'help' me knock off the other. But the last one, the astronaut one, that remains elusive. Until I take off from John Wayne. Then I feel like I am an astronaut. It is amazing.

Just randomly stop in places. I did that in South Boston one time and found out that the quaint Mexican restaurant/bar I had found was a front for a brothel! Adventure! Excitement! Traveling Sales-man (I'm actually in sales support but shush)!

That was one thing the guy mentioned as a downside as well but I think that was his only occasional complaint. I'll be sure to check out the Sky Train as well. The backpack function sounds like a good solution to the weight issue.

One problem I have is that I travel with a small tool bag. I know tools under 7" are supposed to be OK but I haven't tried to actually carry them on. I'd really like to avoid checking baggage but as I'm sure everyone here has run into, one TSA officer who doesn't know their own rules can completely ruin a trip.

What kind of tools? I travel with an Allen wrench set, ammeter, multimeter, calipers (which even look kinda sharp and scary in a TSA-kinda way) and some other random tools. I've never had a problem. Then again, as you say, it is the luck of the draw.

I actually really like Porter. Granted, it is very "in Soviet Russia, plane flies you!" but that is part of the appeal. I feel like I am my grandparents, either riding on a plane dropping bombs or me as a paratrooper or my grandparents, flying across the sea with a baby on board to make sure it isn't a bastard.

You can't beat classics like that. That is experience.

There are lots of things you can do but they aren't good for casual travels or people without a ton of expendable income. I have a Priority Pass membership which means I can pretty much hang out at any international lounge in the event of a delay. At least then I can sleep without worrying about my poo poo getting stolen or get drunk for free. But again, unless you travel enough or just don't care about a $500/year membership it isn't worth it. With that said, more airports have lounges that can be entered with a variety of credit cards and other pay-by-the-hour options for lounges. If you are stuck go ask about a day or hourly pass, it is a way better way to spend your time vs sitting in a noisy smelly terminal.

Basically this. Plus an Rx for Ambien and/or amphetamines. I like the amphetamines myself, one of my co-workers swears by Ambien. Different strokes (in my case literally) for different folks.

I don't travel internationally but I fly from coast-to-coast all the time. Even there, I generate a significant time debt.

Man, I think I travel a lot but I'm a baby at ~20K.

How does everybody deal with the antiquated corporate travel services? My company is cracking down so we have to use them but they are more expensive and less flexible than loving anything else I can use. This month I've had to be late to meetings with customers and my expense report is through the roof! I'm inclined to say "gently caress it" but from what I've seen, I get in less trouble with corporate when I blow off customers as opposed to when I fudge proper corporate protocol.

I've said it before people: capitalism doesn't work.

Yeah, I got in trouble for doing that. They almost didn't reimburse me, which would kinda sucked. And right now it is awful. Something came up, so I booked something yesterday for today. I wake up and find out that the person from the travel service wants to cancel it because (???) so, huh? It is awful.

Granted, they haven't quite gotten it right -- it is beer, yeah, but more of a macro variety. That said, hey, free sixer!

EWR is really good. From LGA there are shuttles to get you to either Midtown or Grand Central. Not as easy as EWR but you can make it work if those flights tend to work better for you/last minute.

Of course, the best way to get into Midtown is to fly into JFK and take the helicopter :unsmigghh:

I fly into SLC pretty regularly. In my experience, flying to and from SLC is pretty awesome because not many people going there have airline status so the airlines are all :homebrew: with upgrades. The airport itself is nothing special. There is a skyclub if you are with DL (I'm not). I can't think of any restaurants worth mentioning. If you are worried about booze, that is an archaic concern. If your flight gets delayed, the Mormon niceness adds a nice layer of efficiency to getting things rebooked. Don't swear. You will want to swear in the security line (last time I was there, no precheck) and a lot of people who don't fly regularly.

That about cuts it. Nothing special.

I just want to vent about my travel agency. It isn't just that they are so very, very bad at what they do but they are also incredibly rude over the phone. I'm in sales. I'm a cheery, happy guy. I'm also super relaxed. So when I ask you to do your loving job like changing a reservation I want you to treat it not like I am asking for Moon-Men from Mars. Furthermore, I may be in a radically different timezone than you are. If I am living in a different day than you are, that doesn't mean that I am crazy.

I loving hate that poo poo so much. I'm so happy I got a promotion that means I won't have to deal with this poo poo anymore.

Is there such a thing as a checkpoint friendly bag that can carry two laptops?

It doesn't need to carry a huge amount of other stuff - chargers, mouse, kindle, and the folder I keep my receipts from my current trip in would be plenty, though I wouldn't say no to more space. I prefer a backpack, but I'll use a shoulder bag in a pinch.

Every nice checkpoint friendly bag I've seen only holds one laptop in a nice protected checkpoint friendly space, and having to take out two laptops + take off my shoes whenever I fly, plus emptying my pockets means I'm the rear end in a top hat in line with four bins getting stared at everytime I fly.

The bag you are looking for is called "pre-check".

I spent last year traveling what felt like 340 days. Realistically, it was somewhere between 280-320, but getting "home" on Friday just before midnight only to fly out Sunday hardly counts. I loved it. Now, I'm in a much more stable situation and it's also great. Since I'd been missing the road, I'm back on it for a quick month taking care of business (everyday!). I'm getting some weird conflicting guilt feelings. It wasn't supposed to be a mammoth trip, but some shipping delays and a meeting kinda shuffled things around so I'm not dipping my toes in, I'm back in a big way. It was supposed to be four travel heavy weeks with some stops back home with the wifey and my kittens. Now it's just all road. Part of me is loving it but part of me doesn't find "Home Sweet Hilton" the same anymore.

Any advice for these sorts of feelings? I never had them before, one place was as good as another.

When in doubt, ask. Let your boss know that you'd love to take the job but because you are 6'4" traveling economy is a concern for you and would the company be willing to pay for the upgrade. Since you only travel 25%, they will probably tell you to suck it up. But if they really want you, they may be willing to make an exception.

JetBlue is pretty awesome because they give me free drinks in coach. I was doing a redeye from LAX to JFK and the people next to me were young and fun. I started ordering drinks and just kinda committed myself to the fact that it was going to be a $100+ dollar flight. We racked up a crazy tab and they let me go scott free. They just told me to highly review and recommend JetBlue whenever their name comes up. They bought my loyalty.

It depends on where you are going in Canada. Vancouver? They don't care. Ottawa, oh yeah. They care. They really really care. Edmonton has been a bit of a mixed bag for me, it depends on whether I've got an Albertan nationalist on my hands. It makes sense that it is all geared towards people who travel for business since we are easily their largest customer group but there should be some sort of concession for normal travelers. It's some real 1% bullshit that drives regular people towards Econolodge and poo poo like that.
