Sonic almost seems like a reference to Lampo the Hypersonic Boy, which is a childhood favorite of mine. Done by the guy who did Metal Guardian Faust!

I swear Sonic is somehow inspired by Lampo the Hypersonic Boy & Co. I always thought his scarf and markings were red, too.
