So glad to have stumbled upon this thread. I've been doing stand up for almost 2 years in Philadelphia. I haven't been doing it as much as I'd like lately because I've been getting more into sketch comedy stuff, but I'm hoping to start getting on stage again more regularly. Here's a set I did recently. I think I maybe drank too much beforehand, but it turned out alright. https://soundcloud.com/trevor-cunnion/raven-lounge-dec-20

Philly actually has a pretty impressive and growing comedy scene. There's open mics just about every day of the week as well as monthly showcases here and there. If you're ever looking to swing by, WitOut.net is a great resource for all things Philly comedy. They keep an updated open mic listing here http://www.witout.net/comedians/open-mics/.

Smerdyakov posted:How much of that is finished material and how much of it was new/you're still working on? The stuff at the beginning is pretty new. Probably the 2nd time I've done the car accident/Home Depot thing and the first time doing the Orange Julius/Applebees bit. The rest I've been doing for a little while but still tweaking here and there.

E the Shaggy posted:Barking? I've never heard that term before. Barking is basically standing outside and trying to get people come to a show. Those "You guys like live comedy?" people in Times Square. I've never done it myself though.

Patrice O' Neal was in Philly shortly before he died. The main club there (Helium) is just a couple blocks away from one of the better open mics in the city. He stopped by the mic after his show, did a set and hung around outside with other open mic comics. I didn't go that night...... I did at least get to see him live that weekend, but I'm still kicking myself over that.

I did a new bit at this competition in Philly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDFUSMB0fho And yeah, I've never taken a stand up class of any kind, but I can't imagine it would outweigh what you learn just doing mics and being around other comics.

I popped in this thread out of curiosity put this on while there were a bunch of people in my living room and they all had a good laugh and have been quoting it ever since. SullivanPRIME posted:So I decided recently to take a serious jab at stand up. I've been doing a comedy show with a friend over the internet for a year now thats been going really well, so I decided it was time to be a lot more daring and actually face a crowd. I'm in Philly and I was wondering if any one knew of any good places for open mic nights to start out at? I tried good ol' google but it only seemed to give me the Helium Comedy Club. I'm in Philly. Raven Lounge Thursday nights is my favorite. 8:30 sign ups. It's on Sansom and like 17th I think. Mondays there's Urban Saloon up on Fairmount. Tuesdays there's a new mic at Medusa Lounge, and I think they also just started one at Dobbs on South St. Not too sure about Wednesdays, I think there's something in Northern Liberties, but I've never been. But yeah, I would recommend going to Raven Lounge and just talking to people. edit: Oh poo poo, forgot about Fergies on Sunday nights. That one is really good. That's like 13th and Sansom. Sign ups at 8:00 I believe.

Recorded my set from last night. Did some new stuff. https://soundcloud.com/trevor-cunnion/trevor-cunnion-the-brewery-1 Side note: If your city has an improv scene it would benefit to get acquainted with it. This was a show with 4 improv groups and me in the middle. The crowds at these are always great. Dr. Magnificent fucked around with this message at 21:52 on Jan 18, 2014 |
