Oh My(,) Goodness! You think that smoking cigarettes is so much of a health risk that I'm a big dummy for doing it, but somehow the risk associated with the cultivation of a schedule I substance is no big deal?? Goon logic I guess. Sorry guys that is one crop that I won't be tending to any time soon.

Leperflesh posted:Cigarettes have a pretty minimal carbon footprint, because both tobacco and paper are made from plants, and plants take their carbon from the atmosphere. There's still some carbon footprint from manufacture and transport, but no more than any typical consumer product really. I know I'm a bit late to the party, but: Quick climate lesson: since plants scrub the CO2 out of the air, they can (instead of being burned, thus releasing that CO2 back to the atmosphere) act as a carbon sink over time by dying, being buried (typically by natural causes - think 'bog' as an example), and then many millennia later being either turned to stone, coal, etc. So by being smoked they are acting as a neutral product (sans manufacture) instead a net decrease in CO2. Though the amount burned compared to cars, any kind of power plant, human-caused brush fires, etc. is pretty minimal, as you said. But poo poo, smoke 'em if you got 'em. I'm more likely to die in the car on the way to work. Anywho, I may pop up again after a couple more years of lurking. Keep on keepin' on. (Still love the pics)

I have two dogs and I bought a house last year; got a knock at the door a few months later. It was the Police serving a warrant on the house for drugs, luckily they knocked since they were not sure if the person they were looking for was here. They still searched my place as the warrant was for the address not a person (kinda scary that they can get a warrant without real due diligence). Fast forward to last week and I have a note on my door from the county sheriffs department asking to call them. Turns out they caught the previous owner, seized a bunch of his money, and because my house is still his last known address they were coming to seize the house. Got it all worked out (hopefully) over the phone but yeah I am lucky that they did not shoot my dogs and seize my house. Don't grow drugs on your property, that is what your neighbor is for. Also gently caress smoker hate, I will smoke a cig for you apatite.

Civil Asset Forfeiture. It's a screaming bloody injustice that is super-common in this country. John Oliver dedicated most of an episode to it, if you're interested, but the gist of it is, if you're suspected of a crime, they can charge your assets with a crime and then arrest them, right into their own bank accounts, and the onus is on you to hire a lawyer and prove your property innocent, which might be hard since they took your money first. Also you're probably already in some legal trouble. Also they spent it. Yes. The police almost always get to spend what they seize. This in no way creates an enormous conflict of interest. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kEpZWGgJks Watch all of this. You need to know this is how it works if you live in this country. Good to know in some jurisdictions they still handle things civilly. In my neck of the woods any drug related search warrant is executed by a "task force" that uses SWAT tactics to break into your house and "catch you off guard" so you can't "dispose of evidence." In situations like that a dog that is guarding you won't be asking to see a badge before it reacts, which they can legally use as an excuse to shoot to kill. Any properties, vehicles, or assets associated or "potentially purchased by" drug activity can be seized and will be auctioned off to fund discretionary spending for the department.

I don't have a dog in this fight but a lot of states do have a number of plants you're allowed per acre because weed does grow on it's own in the wild. I'm not suggesting you actually do anything but make sure you know your state and local specifics. I don't even smoke, but I live in KY and we have so much wild weed that if it wasn't for a little understanding the family farm would have been seized 10 times over by now. We've also had issues with assholes trespassing to plant on our property gorilla style, so keep an eye out for that.

Do you identify and collect them? Not that any of those should be eaten. I think I see a russula emetica and an amanita muscaria. The one near the stump might be some kind of bolete, hard to tell without seeing the bottom. Your far enough north where king boletes (aka porcini) can be had.

Back to smoking lectures! Apatite, I love your wild adventures and want you to enjoy them for a long time. If your mom died of cancer, smoker or not, your own risk is likely much higher. Having worked in oncology, I've seen some awful poo poo. It's mostly a slow, painful, and expensive way to go out. People spend their final months/years in misery and poverty, dragging their loved ones along for the ride. So yeah, quit loving smoking and live long enough to be eaten by bears, preferably while live streaming your grisly grizzly death for this thread's amusement.
