It makes me feel satisfied in a job well done. With a hoarder cleaning up after them is an unrewarding Sisyphean task; that's assuming they're letting you do it at all. The only satisfying cleanout is the one you do after they die or get sent to an old folks home. When it gets to that point many children of hoarders simply abandon their parents' property or sell the houses as is. But this isn't E/N so: Have a blurry living room shot from about 2010. Currently the trash in that room is up to the seat on level on the couch. I'm kind of wondering where the hell the toaster oven was, cause their bedroom really isn't that bad. At least not "oops stepped on a toaster oven" bad.

The one thing I never get with these stories where someone is unemployed and only plays WoW is where do they get the money?? There's stories ALL the time about people who just stop going to work and devote all their time to WoW, but that $15 a month has gotta come from somewhere. I can't imagine it's ALL unemployment

Disability can be up to 1600 a month or but you have to have an earnings record somewhere. Or your parents have to have had one. That's enough to live in some places.

I don't think most people are at the upper limit. I know a few people on disability and their monthly disability check wouldn't cover rent for a one-bedroom apartment.

While neither of us pay our full rent each month, my problem is I work and am putting myself through college for a doctorate in Economics. He... plays WoW and yells into his microphone at ungodly hours of the morning. And happens to be family of the homeowner. Turns out when you are head and shoulders above everyone else in the pleasure to live with department, paying rent becomes secondary to the only dude who does the dishes or cleans the bathroom.

It depends on where you live and how much you spend on things. I used to live on $600 a month. You'd be surprised at how little you can get by on. Granted that relied on rent being dirt rear end cheap but in some areas you can get digs for $200 or $300 a month at times. Where I'm originally from you could find two bedroom apartments for like $350 to $500 a month. Granted it was a poverty-stricken hellhole that was hemorrhaging jobs and population but even so. Not everybody lives i a place where rent has four digits by default. You're right though, it wasn't much of a life. I basically either worked or played video games as I couldn't afford much else.

My wife and I are extremely frugal and money smart. $1600 bucks a month would be enough for us both to retire today, travel, eat great, have pets (small ones) and live a great life. Disability also includes healthcare (according to that This American Life special) I believe. My mortgage is only like $250 right now. edit: $1600 bucks a month is the equivalent of having $480,000 bucks in a retirement account based on the 4% safe withdrawl rate. Does it affect how much they're able to collect? There's also underground money to consider with some people, especially the ones that just want to play video games all day. It also helps if a person had a head start and managed to pay down their debts and/or chose to live a more efficient/cost effective lifestyle. Living on disability 5 years ago would suck rear end because I wasn't established. Living on disability today wouldn't be too hard because I'm debt free and my cost of living is much lower.
