It looks like we might be getting a new Daft Punk album with a mediocre sci-fi movie around it.

Disney wants to do Tron 3, Kosinski back to direct and Daft Punk to score it.

they've probably realized a pattern of "Tron movies don't do great in theaters and then sell crazy well on home media," and with COVID changing the calculus such that theaters are in a shaky position and streaming/home media is currently a safer bet, that probably makes Tron 3 a lot more appealing than it was before.

Jin-Roh has one of my favourite soundtracks, but given my opinions on music being used to manipulate emotions, it shouldn't be in my top faves. I have a big issue with films, TV shows or games that rely on their music to tell you "THIS IS THE SAD SCENE YOU SHOULD FEEL SAD NOW WHY DON'T YOU FEEL SAD???" It's why I find James Horner music is often overblown, or how I think that the soundtrack for Mass Effect 3 is working overtime to try and squeeze emotion out of a presentation that doesn't do nearly enough to earn the emotional response they're gunning for with all the melodrama.

But Jin-Roh is kinda different, and I'll try to explain why. If you've never seen the film, it's a very muted movie, with a very grey and brown colour palette, a slow burn story and minimal dialogue. Despite being an animated film, it eschews pretty much every anime trope I can think of, and I think it's this intentional presentation that makes the soundtrack so effective. The soundtrack isn't trying to tell you when to be sad; instead it is intentionally juxtaposing the expression of emotion against a world shown to be struggling with the need for change. The film might be a Red Riding Hood parable but thematically its more about the resistance to societal change and how established groups have extreme difficulty letting change happen. Fuse represents the unwillingness or inability to change and Kei, the film's most expressive character, represents why change needs to happen. But because these are concepts that require individual outbursts to even consider being an option, much of the underlying tension in the film is left unsaid, as the characters struggle to find the courage to actually speak the words or express how they actually feel.

So you get this intentional disconnect between the evocative music and the emotionally restrained performances and I think it works brilliantly. It's a fantastic soundtrack and a great movie, and it's one of the few "elicit emotions now!" soundtracks that I adore.

I bought the Jurassic Park soundtrack on digital a few years ago but got it on CD back in 2000. Then I borrowed it to a co-worker who never returned it. :(

The Lost World album was cool because it had a cardboard sleeve and it folded out into a little 3D diorama. But I got worried that it would break so I made it into sleeves for a plastic CD jewel case and now it's rad and still pristine 23 years later.

He said he was retiring from live shows due to hearing loss iirc.

Most of the Oingo Boingo band got other gigs and some did tribute stuff; it was amazingly popular in SoCal. There were around 5 different (mostly very good) tribute bands at one point.

Anyway Elfman has been mostly ripping himself off for years at this point - very derivative stuff - so to get what is a functionally a new Oingo Boingo track AND a creepy Elfman-as-Mephistopheles vid to go with it is a nice surprise. Thanks for the link!

They've just released a "Deluxe Edition" of John Powell's score to Solo: A Star Wars story, which now includes all of the music used in the film. That means we can now hear proper versions of tracks like the 'triumphant' version of the Imperial March for the Empire recruitment video, and Duel of the Fates when Qi'ra talks to Maul:

The Solo score feels really old fashioned, I like that John Powell mostly does his own thing, but with the new theme Williams gave him and the few little sprinkling of other music he works in. The love theme between Qi'ra and Han sounds like something from the 70s and I love it.

Gonna double post here because I have a question that has boggled me for a while. How much of that soundtrack do you think was Daft Punk and how much do you think was Joseph Trapanese? There are a few tracks where it's obvious, but I bet Trapanese did the majority. I think he did the same with Oblivion and M83.

This might have been a discussed a while ago, but if anyone knows an article or something I'd love to read about it.

Yeah, back when the TRON: Legacy soundtrack was released, you would get different bonus tracks depending on where you bought it. So if you bought it on iTunes you got different tracks than if you bought it on Amazon. There was even a track that you could only get if you bought it on the Nokia music store...

This release collects all of those bonus tracks together with what was already released, but it's now also available as 24-bit lossless files if you're into that sort of thing.

This release dumps all of the bonus tracks at the end instead of putting them in film order. I believe this is the correct order if you want them to go chronologically:

01 - Overture (2:28) [unused - album track]
02 - The Grid (1:37)
03 - The Son of Flynn (1:35)
25 - Encom Part I (3:53)
24 - Encom Part II (2:18)
04 - Recognizer (2:38)
05 - Armory (2:03)
06 - Arena (1:33)
26 - Round One (1:41)
07 - Rinzler (2:18)
08 - The Game Has Changed (3:25)
09 - Outlands (2:42)
30 - Father and Son (3:09)
10 - Adagio For TRON (4:11)
11 - Nocturne (1:42)
31 - Outlands, Pt. II (2:53)
12 - End of Line (2:36)
28 - Reflections (2:42)
27 - Castor (2:18)
13 - Derezzed (1:44)
14 - Fall (1:23)
23 - Sea of Simulation (2:41)
29 - Sunrise Prelude (2:50)
16 - Rectifier (2:14)
17 - Disc Wars (4:11)
18 - C.L.U. (4:39)
19 - Arrival (2:00)
20 - Flynn Lives (3:22)
21 - TRON Legacy (End Titles) (3:18)
15 - Solar Sailer (2:42)
22 - Finale (4:23)

I don't think I've ever seen anything that breaks it down track-by-track but I wouldn't be surprised if the parts of the music that more closely resemble a traditional film score (with motifs and that) were the ones Trapanese worked on. So stuff like End of Line and The Game Has Changed are very obviously Daft Punk, but tracks like Adagio for TRON or Rectifier were probably Trapanese.

If you listen to the music Trapanese wrote for the TRON Uprising animated show, which he did on his own, you can get a feel of the stuff he was writing himself:

His involvement was to the detriment of both movies IMO. They're fine scores but I don't see the point of restraining either artist. See Knife + Heart for a pure M83 score for example, although it's a very different style than in Oblivion.
