Thanks Ants posted:

Does learning about frame relay even have a value in terms of making it easier to understand another concept later on? I’m aware of my own limited experience but it seems that most people’s interaction with frame relay in 2019 would be pulling it out and moving to Ethernet.

Very roughly: Frame Relay was basically the conceptual parent of ATM which became the conceptual parent of MPLS.

So things like 'discard eligible' flags on packets for QoS was from frame relay days. (Anybody else remember buying FR circuits with a 0 CIR to save $$$ - otherwise known as a burstable circuit?). FR was also heavily used for PtMP (Point to Multipoint aka Star) deployments - large circuit at the datacenter, small ones (56k modem) at the remote points, and the backhaul was done using virtual circuits (PVC/SVC).

So yeah, knowing some history can explain why things have ended up the way they have today.

Get into nursing informatics. It's basically computer people with nursing degrees, and a niche but high demand/pay area.

You do ITIL if you want to get into a (generally highly) regulated field like finance or things like heavy industry, public utilities where reproducible process is king.

Those jobs generally pay well and are stable, but can be boring as poo poo since every issue is managed (using ITIL processes) very well.
