I'm going to be in Death Valley for the first time for three nights car camping from Jan 7-10. Any must-do hikes while we're there?

Just got home from a week doing Yosemite and Death Valley. God drat is Death Valley fuckin cool.

Winter in Yosemite was interesting. It was my first time to the park, so I'll have to go back to see it from a different perspective. I guess I had my first "Old man yells at clouds" moment here while watching people hike on the icy granite with just converses and running shoes and wondering wtf they're thinking.

Death Valley was cool as gently caress due to the multitude of things you could do and see there. I didn't realize how big the whole park is until actually driving around. I may also be biased because I grew up with the desert and love it. It was a full moon while we were there, so not much stargazing to do. However, walking the Mesquite Sand Dunes under the moonlight was pretty neat.

On the way home we drove through Mojave National Preserve and the Kelso Dunes are loving massive. Even from four miles away they dwarfed the Mesquite Dunes at DV.

Hiking up to Nevada Falls on the winter route.

The last mile of switchbacks to the top was like this. Fun times!

Liberty Cap and the moon.

Badwater Basin

There was a gigantic puddle with about 1" of water one mile from the Badwater Basin parking lot which made for some cool photos.

They renovated the Kelso depot into a vistor center in 2005 or so, and they have a small exhibit that you can play that noise from. I can only imagine hearing it in person.

I've got uh, desert mountains?

The Aardvark

I haven't had problems car camping yet, but I usually go off-season when it's cold and not many people are about. The only NP I've been to in-season is Death Valley and it was mostly older people with their RVs.

Hit up Gaskill and Lawson peaks in the Cleveland National Forest on Saturday. Nice and foggy until the last hour or so.

This summer we're gonna take our two year old on their first camping trip to the mountains ~45 minutes away. Looking forward to the fun and horrors that await.

The Aardvark

I don't remember my first solo hike since 90% of the time I'm out and about by myself, but definitely tell people where you're going and don't take risks you would with a group.

I'd probably start with established trails and get a map/compass, etc and practice with them there until you feel confident to move off-trail. I started doing this out at Anza Borrego Desert State Park and the surrounding federal land and now just romp around with a GPS overlay map on my phone and roughly follow it.

Next weekend is probably gonna be it for desert hiking for me, so gonna try to get in one more good trip. After that it'll be back up into the Peninsular Ranges here until those also get hot later in the summer.

Booked a night to take our 2yo camping for the first time. If it goes bad we're only 45 minutes away from home.

The Aardvark

The Yelpification of everything is pretty lame, I think it's ok if something isn't five star every time.

But I also like being able to make it up as I go since you can do that in Anza Borrego Desert State Park so the idea of maintained trails isn't something on my priority list.

The Aardvark

It's been incredibly slow at work so I've been filling time by making lists of desert hikes I want to do later this year and there just never is enough time for them all.

The Aardvark
Aug 19, 2013

Oh that's neat. I'm ~1.5-2hr from Anza Borrego Desert State Park so my winters are usually wandering out there at least once a month. 70% should be fun to see out there.

8-year-old survives ‘extraordinarily rare’ cougar attack near Washington’s Lake Angeles

quote:

Staff evacuated all campers in the Lake Angeles area and closed the Lake Angeles and Heather Park areas until further notice.

“Due to the extreme nature of this incident, we are closing the Lake Angeles area and several trails in the vicinity,” said Olympic National Park wildlife biologist Tom Kay in the news release. “Out of an abundance of caution, the Lake Angeles Trail, Heather Park Trail, Switchback Trail, and the entire Klahhane Ridge Trail are closed until further notice.”

If anyone had plans up there soon

Up to Grapevine Mountain yesterday since the temps dipped a bit around Borrego Springs. Can sorta make out Salton Sea in the background about 30 miles away.

Did a night up at Mt. Laguna with my 2.5yo as his first camping experience. Overall it went really well for it being a boy's night, just got a bit colder than I expected. I made a list of "Remember this for next time" since taking a toddler solo makes it a lot different.

Since it was successful the next idea is to take him and the wife down around Borrego Springs this winter with the bigger tent and let the boy experience the desert for the first time.

I've got a 4 year old daughter that I'm planning on taking out for her first time. Just about a mile walk to a lake. Any must haves that you recommend?

Probably something to do in the tent when it gets dark. I figured he'd be tired from riding his bike and running around, so I brought my 3p backpacking tent instead of the car camping tent since it was just the two of us and much easier to set up and watch the toddler by myself.

We ended up watching Peppa Pig for like two hours until he crashed.

I also had zero expectations or plans I wanted to do just in case he really hated it and we had to do the 40 minute drive home.

Sunday's goal was to hit up San Ysidro mountain, the Thimble, and White BM for the first desert hike of the season. Ended up only getting White BM due to weather.

Thimble on the left. Got up to the last ~30ft but too wet to scramble up to the top.

San Ysidro is ~600ft up and 0.75 miles into this boulder field so we decided to go home.

I have work in San Diego in April. Anywhere within driving distance worth visiting that time of year?

Depends on what you'd want to see and how far is driving distance to you. About an hour east is the Mt. Laguna part of the Cleveland National Forest and 75 minutes NE is the Palomar mountain bits of it. Go about about 1.5-2hr east and you're in Anza Borrego Desert State Park. There's also a lot of open space areas within 30 minutes of downtown.

I usually try to do one or two desert hikes every April to close out the season since that's the last month of comfortable temps. This April a friend and I did Whale Peak and it got up to 100F before we finished.

The hike I usually suggest for first-time Colorado desert visitors is The Domelands and Windcaves, especially if you like geology. The drive up and over the mountains on the 8 has a lot of changes in the biomes we got in San Diego, and a neat stop is at Desert View Tower in Jacuma Hot Springs.

Others are to see natural water tanks or some some small slot canyon stuff, or if we're lucky and it rains a lot this winter Hellhole Canyon's falls will flow a bit and there might be a lot of wildflowers blooming, especially by Clark Dry Lake.

I carry a minimum of one gallon of water whenever I'm out there, up to two if it's going to be a long day. A lot of the hikes have no deidicated trails, just following washes and footprints from previous hikers which is something I really enjoy about the desert here.

Borrego Springs is an International Dark Sky town, so if you want to see stars and have some of a night to spare it's great for that too.

There are some hot springs not too far from it at the town Warner Springs, but as far as I know there is not one up top. The oldest fire lookout tower in the Cleveland National Forest is there tho.

Went up a few benchmarks in Storm Canyon at Anza Borrego Desert State Park on Thursday, saw no one at all. The weather has been from low 60s to mid 70s this month and not too much wind up top.

Did a loop that hit up Pyramid Peak, Marble Peak, and Rosa Point over the weekend. The goal was to also bag Mile High Mountain but I was gassed at Rosa Point so to add another 1100ft over four miles after going up 4700ft was not appealing.

Never met the guy but Steve Fausset has been the desert peak muse for my friends and I, his name is on a bunch of the registers back to the 90s, so it was sad but fitting to find out he passed on this way.

Glad you had fun out here! ABDSP is my favorite place since you can just wander about wherever and it has lots of neat features.

Went out there to Whale Peak (again) on Saturday with a friend for what's most likely my last desert hike until October. Now it'll be back up into CNF and the San Jacinto Mountains for fun times.
