So my mom has an 8 year old DLP tv that just died. We're going to replace it with a new one, but the catch is that it has to fit tightly inside the enclosure that was built for the old one. The enclosure is 68wx41h, which means that 70in is probably the only size that fits. Do you guys have any recommendations for a 70 inch tv?

Don Lapre posted:The sharp 70 should fit with room for a soundbar. Is sharp a good brand compared to the others? I've always bought Samsung tvs, so I don't know anything about these things. I'm assuming warranties, service, etc are all more or less the same these days...

I was planning on taking a very close look at the new 4k Vizio P-series TVs (specifically the 50in announced at CES for $999). Originally they said it would be released in the Summer, but now it looks like it'll be in the Fall. Bummer. Was planning on buying one mid-summer. https://www.facebook.com/vizio?filter=2 "The P-Series will hit stores this fall! We will have more details closer to launch."

The $999 Vizio 4K models looked promising at CES but last I checked their shipping dates slipped to "later this year" which probably means they're just hoping to not miss the holiday season. Is there even going to be cable-TV 4k any time soon? When I can watch sports in 4K, it'll be worth it...

If I were to wait for the Vizio 4K TV, how future-proofed would it even be? Would it even be able to play 4K content 5 years from now, or would there be some sort of bullshit standards or formatting issue that causes the content to not work? (I know nothing about blu-ray or 4k standards clearly, I just know there's several players in the 4k game similar to blu-ray and I don't want to end up with the HD-DVD of TVs, if thats even possible)

Finally moving out of my dorm-sized room and getting a house. Time to upgrade from my trusty 2006 32in Samsung LCD which to this day has zero blown pixels or issues, despite getting me through college and like 5 moves. I'd like to upgrade in size, so I was thinking probably 55in (but 50in could do as well if the price was right). My living room is probably on the smaller/medium size range. I'll upgrade to 4K in a few years so I'm not worried about it being the best and lasting 8 years like my last one. I watch sports (football primarily, some baseball, followed by a little hockey). My fiance pretty much only watches Netflix and we watch movies together frequently. I may get a console in the future but for now gaming isn't much of an issue. So, I'd say my needs aren't too specialized. I'm mostly going for size. Here's a couple of options that I found at Costco that seem comparable: Vizio $649): http://www.costco.com/Vizio-55%22-Class-1080p-120Hz-Smart-LED-HDTV-E550i-B2.product.100100315.html Samsung $900): http://www.costco.com/Samsung-55%22-Class-1080p-120Hz-Smart-LED-HDTV-UN55H6300AFXZA.product.100108480.html JVC ($550): http://www.costco.com/JVC-55%22-Class-1080p-120Hz-Smart-LED-HDTV-EM55FTR.product.100103365.html Are these comparable at all? Obviously I need to go see them in person, but on the surface why would the Samsung be so much more expensive? [Tell] me what to do edit: another one I just saw is this Samsung plasma that's only $700. Whats the deal here, is it last year's model or something? Seems very cheap for a Samsung http://www.costco.com/Samsung-60%22-Class-1080p-600Hz-Plasma-HDTV-PN60F5300BFXZA.product.100110098.html#BVRRWidgetID moon demon fucked around with this message at 21:30 on Sep 26, 2014 |

SteveMcQueen posted:I can't speak to the size of the room but I just went through a similar search process and ended up with the Samsung Plasma. People said to watch out if you set it up in a bright room (due to reflections off the screen rather than brightness) but so far it's been incredible. A huge upgrade from my old LCD and we watch tv in the daytime regularly. Hm... The room I'm putting it in is going to be pretty bright. It's going to be opposite 2 windows. We do watch most of our TV at night though, so that might be fine. I'll take a look in-store if they still have it.

Is there much practical difference between the Vizio E and M series? Looking in the 55-60in range.

Any opinions on this LG 55LB5900 versus the Vizio E550i? They're about the same price on Amazon/Best Buy, but I'll be using the Best Buy mover's guide coupon. The LG seems slightly better-rated, and I don't need any smart TV stuff, but the Vizio has more HDMI inputs. I only use 2 right now, so that's not a big deal, but could be a future-proofing issue. As a side note, the Mover's Guide coupon prohibits use on "select" LG TVs. This is a shot in the dark, but does anyone happen to know if the coupon will work on an LG that is being discounted, as this one is? http://www.bestbuy.com/site/lg-55-c...B5900&cp=1&lp=1 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/vizio-e...e550i&cp=1&lp=1

The Joe Man posted:Don't buy an LG. The E550i has one of the best display lag ratings for that size across all brands. If you plan on playing games, this is important (otherwise not so much). I mostly plan on watching movies and sports (football mainly, some baseball and hockey). Movies would be at night, sports would likely be in the day, if it makes a difference. I may get a PS4 eventually but not right now, so gaming isn't a big deal. Except maybe Civ5 on Steam Big Picture, though I've never tried it. edit: is there a particular reason you don't like the LG? moon demon fucked around with this message at 20:00 on Oct 13, 2014 |

The Joe Man posted:My grandparents have 3 of them and each one has a different stupid problem with it. I ended up getting this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/panasonic-55-class-54-5-8-diag--led-1080p-240hz-smart-hdtv/3924175.p?id=1219094699379&skuId=3924175 It looked better than both the LG and Vizio in the store, and I've heard nothing but good things about Panasonics. I couldn't find many reviews about this specific set because it's a Best Buy exclusive, but I am very pleased so far. I haven't had much time to set it up or play with the settings yet. I believe the panel is just a variation of the AS65U series, so I'll probably look into calibration settings for that panel and try them out.
