Are there any good 40" 4K+HDR screens? The current best one seems to be the Sony XBR-43X800D but that's only 60Hz. Does that really matter anymore? I kind of want to get the Samsung Serif but I know it doesn't have a great display, also it's $1400 for 40" but it would go so well with my place. Why won't LG make 40" OLED displays!?!

40" is way too small for 4K to have any benefit at all, unless you're sitting at monitor-style distances. Most of the TV manufacturers have stopped putting any effort into 40" displays, and will just use it as a dumping ground for years old tech built at the lowest prices possible.

You gotta look at bigger screens to get better TV displays.

That sucks since anything bigger would completely overtake my space. The joys of living in a tiny apartment in the city. I'm currently sitting around 6' from the tv which is a 32".

I was excited to finally upgrade to 4K and OLED, but the space the TV fits into can handle 48" MAX. Amazon doesn't appear to even have an OLED 4K TV smaller than 55" so that's out, apparently.

I'm willing to spend up to $1,200, which I figure should get me something pretty good for the size. It will be hooked up to a PC (GTX 1080 card) and be used for 90% TV/Movies, and 10% gaming (Civ-like games mostly). It will be hooking into a soundbar and sub receiver that can take HDMI or optical.

Any advice?

Can the following dimensions fit in your space, 43.1" x 27" x 9.4"? Because if they can then you can get a Sony 49x900e. Hell, the 55" is 48.4" wide.

I'm very happy with it so far, it looks fantastic, though I'm still figuring out the inputs and picture settings and how to get UHD content.

I went in as a smart-TV agnostic but Android TV was kind of a hilarious disappointment. Slow and unintuitive and it doesn't have a native NHL app which is the first thing I searched for. I didn't know what to expect, but I thought it would be much slicker than this.

e: it's also really god damned heavy, I'm glad I didn't decide to wall mount this thing

I love my 930E, but I've had some issues with the hardware. The logic board failed and they sent me an extra power supply which did nothing, I had to eventually get home service from Sony to get it replaced. A few months later my tv didn't turn on again and but luckily the extra power supply worked. If anything else happens I hope it's before January when my Sony warranty runs out.

Mess around with a few of those settings so the AndroidTV isn't as bloated. And if you happen to use VUDU (you should totally get a Movies Anywhere account) the built in app doesn't support 4K or Dolby Vision so download the one from the Google Store which does (and now you'll have two versions of VUDU since you can't uninstall the one that comes with the system).

I ended up having to use my Sony warranty in the first year for my x930e, first the tv wouldn't turn on so I got a replacement power brick and then it kept happening with the new power brick until my tv just wouldn't turn on, I had to have the board replaced.

My issue is that that replacement bpard messed with my default settings so the Cinema Pro or Expert settings were way too brown and would have benefited from calibration, but it really didn't make sense to spend an extra $500 which was half what I paid for the tv at the time.

Anyway, warranties aren't that bad, you never know when you'll use them.

It’s that time of year again, when LG OLEDs go on sale and I tempt myself with questionable financial decisions.

One thing that consistently pulls me back from the ‘Buy’ button is that I have a pretty decent TV as is - 55” 2017 TCL P605, which has really been a bang-for-the-buck champion during the 4 years I’ve had it.

I’d like to move up to a 65” LG C1, but I can’t help but feel like that’s a lot of money to spend on a relatively marginal upgrade over what I’ve already got.

What do you all think? Worthwhile upgrade, or better to hold out another year or two*?

*This is almost certainly what I’ll actually be doing, but I’m curious to get some outside opinions.

I have a Sony 930e which is from the same year and much better than your current tv. Basically if you're going to notice the change in size from your current sitting spot and if you're going to do gaming using one of the newer consoles you should totally upgrade, if not, don't worry about it.

Anyways, I’m in Canada :canada:, trying to spend $1000 or less on a 65” 4K. I don’t think I need (read: can afford) OLED, and I don’t watch sports or own a PS5, so 60Hz is probably fine. Honestly 4K seems extravagant at this point, but I’m sure we’ll pick up a 4K AppleTV or something soon. Unfortunately the TV is staying above the fireplace, which is at the correct height if you’re standing up, and we don’t have room up there for a 70”+.

Qs:
1. At what point should I upgrade the wall mount? It seems to hold up our 50” Toshiba ok (from Target Canada’s closing sale lol), but the mount came with the house and I’m not sure what the specs are on it.
2. I’m thinking something like this HiSense or this Sony - any opinions? Or recommendations, if you’re also in the Canadian-fake-Black-Friday-sale boat
If the wall mount fits the new tv it would probably be able to handle a new bigger tv since they're so much lighter than previous generation tvs.

Either of those tvs should be fine for what you want. If you wanted to upgrade to a better tv, then I'd go for a Hisense 88g or a TCL 6 series.

Which can be challenging when I can't actually see anything.

How many 4k devices are you plugging in to your receiver? At this point the easiest thing would probably be to plug the 4k items to the tv and route the audio to the receiver. For any non-4k devices, make sure the video is just passthrough so the receiver isn't trying to upconvert something it can't obviously do, and you can have the tv do any upconversion since TV's are much better at that than receivers in the first place.
