Yuck h264 is good but the way it can artifact can be really distracting, like when a face is taking up lots of screen space, and it moves, and the eyes and mouth move etc but the skin texture, freckles and whatnot, obviously don't register as a big enough change so they don't move, or at least lag behind or something.... It looks weird and creepy,

what am i gonna do, call up the tv guys and lecture them on the finer points of mpeg4 encoding

next question: when is mpeg5 coming out and will it encode in 3 dimensions? (not just 2 x 2d like new 3d is)

There are also cinematography concerns with going to 48 fps. Shooting at 48 FPS cuts the exposure time for each frame in half. Which means you need twice as much light, either by opening up the aperture by one stop (which lessens your depth of field) or increasing the brightness of the scene.

You're also doubling the amount of data generated, which is a problem for any production.

welp i remember watching "gladiator" and the action scenes were staccato or hard to describe and it turns out that yeah like youre talking about you have flexibility, on 24fps you can choose to record each frame from 1sec/24 (or slightly less) and get motion blur or you can record each frame for much less and actually record much less information than happened, less motion blur, and a different effect! wow imagine the world we live in

I still wonder about the whole framerate thing. People that like 24fps is because it simulates motion blur better or something? Would your eyes still perceive a blur from fast motion of a projected image, if it was at some ludicrously high(infinite for all intents and purposes) framerate? Doesn't the brightness of the projection affect perception of blur, and i dunno, the fact that it's all on one focal plane and maybe some other poo poo. Is it possible that 24fps blurriness played back on screen is more realistic to how we would see things in the real world compared to 48fps?

10-bpc is stupid for viewing as well because about .01% of people have desktop pcs configured in such a way where you can view 10-bit.

To view in 10-bit, according to the doom 9 forums:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=166844

1) Hook up a quadro or other professional card capable of 10-bpc RGB
2) use Display Port (as it's the only connector capable of 10-bpc)
3) Have a monitor that is 10-bpc capable (NO your $300 korean ips monitor will not work)
4) Use a program that can draw a 10-bpc overlay because windows/mac os does not support a 10-bpc video mode.

Right now it's photoshop or Premiere so to recap you need about $4000 minimum in hardware plus a $2000 piece of software to watch 10-bpc encoded content in every shade possible.

Probablly not as hardware players need to have an i-frame every so often.

also the standard says that a GOP can only be so long.

i'm sure you could hack x264 to encode something like that but every scene change would look bad.

GOP as in the republicans? Wow.. Weird anyway that's hosed up I mean it should just decode what is encoded

Are there any apps/toys that can be used for messing around with the encoding? Like giving wrong I frames or other fuckery?

so yeah mkv etc is a container for codecs and h264 is a codec but can h264 exist without a 'tainer

like does .h264 exist and is it just video? and does that poo poo need large headers or something? and what is stopping it being used like a gif? like are the headers etc so big that small 5 second 200x300 h264 "vids" like huge as gently caress or what
and can someone make a plugin so we can play these in yospos? and how am i going to make these files?
