That isn't the whole story with forts, either. I've had situations where rebels would capture a province protected by a fort, then I'd kill the rebels and move on, and the province never gets re-captured despite any and all adjacent forts being active and in my control. I eventually get a popup about rebels being close to enforcing demands and I'm like, "What rebels?!".

:science: Many cannons were actually made of bronze, because (among other reasons) bronze is more flexible and thus less prone to bursting apart without warning. Cast iron cannons were popular not because they were superior but because they were much cheaper (both in initial price as well as in longevity; bronze cannons wore out faster).
