I've always thought of the Cursed Earth as the libertarian hellhole equivalent to the nanny state hellhole of Megacity One. Giant corporations literally running amok.

And that the presence of the corporate mascots is an additional element that adds support to this interpretation. It's a counter-balance to the Nanny state/welfare state dystopia Megacity One is supposed to represent - 95% unemployment and everyone's on the dole, but it still beats the horrors of the Cursed Earth.
