Just found that there’s a new shortcut unlocked when you pay Robin to add the shortcuts. It’s south of Gunther’s museum, leads to the tidal pool area of the beach.

That was actually part of the original set of shortcuts and not new just rarely used. Amusingly if you want you can use that instead of building the bridge for 300 wood but usually only useful for random challenge runs.

Got barn #2 up and full of piggies and drat the truffles are flowing. I have both barns attached to one big field filled with grass so it's hard to see the truffles sometimes. Do they despawn if I don't gather them throughout the day? It definitely feels like more are found if I am actively looking for them but I haven't been paying close enough attention to tell.

Truffles only despawn at the end of a season but it's good to pick them up by the end of the day so the pigs have more area to dig 'em up.

There's some weirdness with truffles like they can spawn in grass but can't be dug up from grass and depend on the pig walking around to spots it can dig from.

Unsurprisingly there's a mod to make them less finicky, too. https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/23228

"Hi Everybody!"
You can also construct a fence around the first row of tiles just below the barn door, so Pigs have juuust enough space to mill about and generate Truffles, but they'll spawn outside the fence for easy collection. No fuss, no hunting, only moderate animal cruelty through cage farming.

I am a mouth, and I must scream

Anyone able to help me figure out what craft I'm missing for perfection? I'm at 99% of crafts made. I have the extra crafting info setting on and have checked every item I've unlocked. They all have at least 1 craft. I've checked all the shops I can think of: Pierre's, Marnie's, Robin's, Willy's, Gus', Sandy's, Krobus', Clint's, the Casino, and the Desert and Island Traders for recipes I'm missing. I've got all the Qi reward recipes and have unlocked all the recipes from special orders: Solar Panel, Geode Crusher, Farm Computer, Bone Mill, Fiber Seeds, Stone Chest, Quality Bobber, Mini-Obelisk, and Monster Musk. I have all five masteries. Are there any festival-only crafting recipes? Or recipes from shops that are only available on certain days?

Here's my crafting screens, presumably something is missing from them:

It's been 5 or so years since I last played this and in that time I've become a bit firmer in my own disinterest in having kids. Also only learnt crib removing was even a thing from this thread.

So the first day post house upgrade, Robin was off doing pilates and I was amused how panicked/relieved I was going to sleep that night about The Question. Second night, I completely forgot to see Robin, so at 11pm I grabbed the unused tent from a chest and camped next to Linus, did some 6am fishing, then totally casually I swear barged in to Robins at 9am.

When she TNT'd the crib...

There's an option in the setting to "Show Advanced Crafting Information" that I always turn on that shows if you've crafted something and how much. You probably know but others may not.

One of the things I do to make crafting easier is to put everything in chests around a workbench I buy from Robin's. It draws things from nearby chests and with the new bigger chests makes things relatively easy. Granted I've yet to get all the new crafting recipes for the new 1.6 farm but it makes it easier. Same thing for cooking is to buy extra mini-fridges and just throw food stuff in them.

I've been mostly successful in my stupid amount of hours played since last night in avoiding guides but I am running into the same problem I always run into — I'm a hoarder. I've played too many games to know the crappy carrot that's worth nothing is actually an end game necessity (or that's my feeling about things anyway.) Because of this I'm pretty much broke. I do fish, but even then I'm hoarding fish because the community center is something I've never completed. Apart from looking up guides — and experience — is there any easy heuristic for knowing which stuff is important? Obviously I check the bundles once I get something, I've been figuring out gifts, and I assume more difficult to find stuff is more difficult for a reason (already have my dinosaur egg I'm not giving to the museum until I can hatch one.) I need cash, but equally this is my second or third go around at SV and I've yet to complete the community center ever.

Also, I'm playing on PC on a controller. People have mentioned non-obvious control stuff that makes your life easier in the long run. Is there anything I should know about a controller on PC?

And... The last time I played I don't think there was different maps, and I have to say the Mountain-Top map is brilliant! I'm going to have to seriously plan my farm. It's already given me the urge to go back and try out other maps and I'm only about sixteen hours into this play through.

On an Xbox/Steam deck layout, the Y button goes right to your crafting menu.

In the inventory screen, pressing RB moves your cursor immediately over to the right, onto whatever icon is there.

At any time when your inventory is pulled up, pressing the equivalent of the back or 'select' button on the controller immediately sorts your inventory. This will also keep your tools in whatever order you Iike, though it will always move them to the upper-leftmost area.

Also, in any menu that also has a trash can available, pressing B will bring your cursor immediately to it. So if you want to trash something, pick it up with A, press B so your cursor is over the trash can, and then press A again to discard it.

In addition to the above if you open a chest and hit RB it'll move your cursor to the add from inventory to chest button on the right. It makes moving things from your inventory faster.

Also if you want to skip a cutscene pressing select or back is the button to skip if you can skip the cutscene.

This game definitely rewards hoarding. It's funny you mention carrots specifically: you can feed them to your horse for a significant speed boost.

There are three things to consider for gifts:
- Some items are (nearly) universally loved. These are generally very hard to get, and you want to stockpile them. Or not, because wouldn't you prefer to give someone a gift that they specifically like?
- Many items are (nearly) universal likes. These give ~half as much friendship as a loved gift, but are much easier to get.
- Quality affects how much friendship a villager gets from a loved or liked gift.
Honestly, I suggest you do yourself a favor and use a guide, at least to see what the universal loves and likes are.

General item importance:
- If you want to hoard EVERYTHING, stockpile no more than 5 of each item.
- If you find that you burn through that stockpile quickly, then stockpile more of them.
- You do not need to stockpile multiple qualities of each item. Normal quality is usually fine. Animal products are notable exceptions, because after a while you will only get high-quality products from your animals.
- If you get married, stockpiling your spouse's gifts is cute :3
- Few bundles require more than 1 - 5 of an item.
- You don't need to stockpile fish, unless you want to keep some to make into bait, you need it for making specific foods, or you're planning to rapidly expand a fish pond.
- Clothes can be put in a dresser instead of taking up room in a chest.

To be clear, I'm talking specifically about items you're keeping just-in-case. Obviously, things like wood, coal, ores, etc. you'll want hundreds of.

Others have addressed your controls question so I'll try to help with your other problem: being broke and having hoarder mentality.

Here's something to keep in mind: things that you plant, and animal products, are there to make you money. You can even process them in the various machines to make even more money. When in doubt: sell it. At worst you can get another of a thing next year when the season rolls around.

One helpful thing, if you find something you have not donated to the museum, the description will tell you that Gunther could tell you more about it. If you get a description of the thing instead, SELL IT.

Gems are valuable, but they also have some other uses. I'd sell most but keep 10-20 around for various uses. They're also valuable for gifting.

Hoard ores, wood, stone, fiber, and other raw materials. Generally you can never have too much. As far as fish go, some are used for the Community Center and some are used in cooking. Same with crops. When you upgrade your house once, you can have fridges that can store your cooking ingredients. And you can even cook right from them. No need to have in your inventory.

As for the Community Center... When in your inventory screen, hover your cursor over an item. If that item is needed for a bundle, the beige icon on the right that looks like a tree will pulse. That should help you determine what you need to keep and what you can sell.

Processing things makes them more profitable, so go nuts with the Mayonnaise Machines, Cheese Presses, Kegs, and Preserves Jars. That's where the real money lies.

Good luck, hope my advice will help you!

Thanks all. I knew most of that but my inclination was to still hoard "just in case." It looks like I'll be selling off my fish stocks and keeping a few of the universally liked veggies.

Now to figure out how to plan out my Mountain-top Farm. I don't even know what I want to do in it. It's the middle of the summer and I haven't even been in the mine yet (trauma from previous versions.)

I took the octopath less travelered,

And it made one-eighth the difference.
Feel like after my current playthrough I'll have to start making my own custom mod list. I'm loving all these expansions and various other QoL mods, but there's also a few I haven't touched (I'm too monogomous for most Stardew mods) and some that kinda bloat the game. Also I made the mistake of doing a randomized Community Center so I have items I need which I haven't seen yet and where I have no idea which mod they are from.

The Expanded/Ridgeside/East Carpe mods alone add a ton of depth to the gameplay experience, though, and it's really cool how the mod community works so hard to try to make each mod work with each other. Kinda wish there was more interaction between the Ridgeside and East Carpe communities, but hey, maybe there's mods for that not in the mod list I installed.

Regardless I don't really care about end game content so I'm actually happy to have a feeling of having too many options, as it helps slow down the part where I eventually get bored and quit. Maybe I'll finally make it past Spring Year 2 of a game!

Counterpoint: Mushroom Logs are easy money which synergize very well with tree-tapping. If you've already got some rows of maple and oak trees down to get maple syrup for bee houses and oak resin for kegs, it pays to slap mushroom logs between them to get a huge surplus of mushrooms which you can sell, dehydrate and sell, or just turn into life elixirs.

It's basically a little extra treat you can give yourself for something you're probably doing anyway.
