Do you have to replace fertilizer after you harvest a crop that doesn't continue producing where you used fertilizer? It always looks like the fertilizer is still there.

How about using 2 fertilizers at once on the same plot?

I completed the fish tank in the community center and Willy gave me a copper pan. He explained how to use it but I didn't get a chance to actually use it since I had to buy some seeds before Pierre closed. Do the ripples show up often enough for me to carry around the copper pan all the time and are the minerals and ores you get actually make it worth it? I just unlocked the quarry and it seems that will give me everything I'll need for the foreseeable future.

Apparently if you pick up the level 10 foraging skill that makes all foraged items you pick up gold it works on the forage seeds you can make and grow on your farm. No need for fertilizer. That's pretty crazy and is making winter a lot more profitable than I expected. Especially when I convert the crystal fruits in wine or jams. Just need to save 5 or 6 of each to make more seeds. Does anybody know if this is more profitable than actually growing other things?

That's what I thought too until I started growing wild winter crops on my farm. It turned out to be one of my most profitable seasons.

I learned just recently that truffles are considered forage. Whenever I pick one up it is always gold and there is a chance I get a second. It almost makes it not worth it to make into oil since you only make 100 more gold. I don't think he put a lot of thought or programming know how into the foraging perks.

I also want to make sure I understand how crops growing faster works. From a reddit post I saw it works by taking days off of the various stages. I think parsnips take 4 days to grow in 4 stages so you can't grow them any faster since every plant needs to go through all the stages. Plants that have more stages and takes more time to grow seem to get the most benefit. How the math actually works is you take 10% or whatever and then round up to find out how much time is taken off. The perk in farming that lets you grow things faster is also broken and gives 25% instead of 10% and stacks in a weird way with fertilizers. Also for some reason the plants that take a season to grow somehow gently caress up the math and grow slower for some reason. Did I get any of that wrong?

Does the level 10 farming perk that makes things grow faster break tree growth? I have some trees I planted a season and a half ago that haven't finished growing. They are surrounded by pavement and nothing is growing within the 9 tiles.

You can't surround them with pavement until they're fully grown. Get rid of the pavement and make sure the 9 tiles are clear of anything else, then once they grow to full you can re-pave.

Does every space around them need to be clear of anything until its fully grown?

I have mixed feelings on this. By the end of year 1 I never bother to forage any more because it just fills up your inventory with low value fruits, berries and nuts.

Forester on the other hand has the skill that makes wood be worth 50% more gold and that can be useful for an early boost in gold. Likewise getting hardwood from regular trees is great but only if you actually plan to use large amounts of hardwood. For example by making a lot of cheese presses and oil makers.

I would say that if you are making a playthrough based on animal products then forester is better.

Forager is amazing when you combine the guaranteed gold star with possibly of getting two of the foraged item and winter seeds. Those skills apply to Seasonal Seeds you make and plant. I ended up making insane amounts of money from growing Winter Seeds my first winter which allowed me to fully upgrade my barn and coup, upgrade a bunch of tools, buy some animals, and still had money left over to buy a poo poo load of seeds come Spring 2. Even if it falls off a cliff after that just being able to make a lot of money farming during winter was worth it.

Is there any essential set of mods for a first timer? Not like cosmetic but for slightly better quality of life or balance while playing?

This website has some good mods and instructions about how to install them. To use most of these mods you have to download SNAPI.

Personally I would suggest this show sell price in inventory. This is a huge quality of life mod.

The time speed mod is also really helpful. Normally 10 minutes in game time is 7 seconds real time which seems really fast. The mod defaults to 14 seconds which seems way too long. Personally I use 11 seconds and that seems like a good middle ground.

This mod shows on your map NPC locations. This is something that should be in the game by default.

This mod adds in new entrances to areas of the map It really helps with moving around the map. The biggest downside of this is it gives you access to an area of the map you would normally need 200 wood to access.

This one adds a button that allows you to instantly call your horse to wherever you are.

This mod is probably the most important one. It makes all crops to be harvested with the scythe. Once you have a huge farm and are pulling up over 100 plants at a time this mod is a HUGE lifesaver.

Those are the main ones I use.

I was screwed over on my second playthrough because I did this and ended up getting really lovely luck that first spring. It rained once or twice in the first 10 days and then nothing for the rest of the season. I ended up not upgrading any of my tools that first spring waiting for the rain that never came.
