What is Roderick on the Line? Roderick on the Line is a weekly podcast starring Merlin Mann and John Roderick. Each episode features a freeform conversation covering anything and everything, but often it comes down to Hitler (and stuff). Who are these guys? John Roderick is a Seattle-based singer/songwriter. He's best known for his band, The Long Winters and for his time in Harvey Danger. You can see him here playing bass for the first time ever, live on national TV. He is also one of the most interesting people in the world. He enjoys travelling the globe (mostly on foot), eating meatball subs in the bathtub, and collecting everything from globes to candelabras. Merlin Mann is best known for his work on 43folders.com, and on his other podcasts, You Look Nice Today and Back to Work (both of which I also enthusiastically recommend listening to). Where should I start? A good place would be the beginning, Episode 00: "Suit of Vomit". Some other picks would be Episode 21: "Dead Rubber Girl in My Closet", Episode 25: "Supertrain" (which will come up a lot in later episodes), and Episode 31: "Uncle Licky". And if you just want a brief taste of what you're in for, I'd listen to John describe the time his pillows turned into owls, from Episode 26: "Go Practice the Car". You can subscribe to the show here or on iTunes.

I was starting to worry that I'd picked the worst possible time to start this thread.

John was on JoCo Cruise Crazy, so that probably messed with the schedule for both weeks. They went a month between episodes at one point last year. Lets hope that doesn't happen again.

Merlin just tweeted this a little while ago: @hotdogsladies posted:Team Supertrain: Roderick on the Line is NOT on hiatus. We’ve just had a terrible time finding a chance to record. That's pretty much what I suspected, but it's definitely good to hear it for sure.

I'm really worried about John having to find a business manager now.

Along the same lines, here's an interview the two of them did back in 2007. Merlin eventually released this as an episode of the show, but it was originally from way earlier. http://vimeo.com/19041249 https://vimeo.com/19041249 Diabolik900 fucked around with this message at 15:11 on Jun 8, 2013 |

I just noticed that today is the show's second birthday, and I can't let that go un-noted.

If you guys need something else to listen to once you're done with this week's episode, John was a guest this week on The Todd Barry Podcast: http://www.feralaudio.com/27-john-roderick/ Definitely a good listen in my opinion.

So who else is buying a white jumpsuit after listening to this week's show? Gotta be ready for the stick fights.

peter banana posted:freely admitting that those theories fly in the face of all evidence of women's real experiences That part really struck me. He said something to the effect of "It's all anecdotal. This statistic says this, that statistic says that" which makes it sound like he has no idea what anecdotal actually means. He seems to come from a very heavily female family. How many times has he mentioned a male relative besides his dad? I'm sure there must have been some, but I can't think of any. He talks a lot about his sister and his mom though. He sees how his family works and is extrapolating from there, and it's giving him a warped view of society as a whole.

What I really liked about it is that he spent all that time telling the story, and still remembered to bring it back around to the artichokes in the end.

Some hero is putting together an iBooks series titled "The Definitive Guide to Roderick on the Line". So far it only covers episodes 000-005, but he plans to keep updating it. https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/definitive-guide-to-roderick/id910018983
