Well funny enough... after I got home from work today I decided to go through the loose change containers I have, some of which have been sitting around for 25+ years after being inherited. I've found a ton of wheat pennies, nothing valuable really. 1938-58 with no steel pennies. Found a 1941 mercury dime in decent shape. And two half-dollars; '67 and '70 Pretty decent for not expecting to find anything at all. Now I've also got a 50 lb box of rolled coins from the same place as all those loose coins... I guess I gotta go through them now too!

Those wheat pennies posted in that big set above are really worth 10-15 each if they're 30's up?? I don't have nearly as many as that, maybe about three dozen, '36-'58, no steel in similar looking condition, but mostly Philly mint, The detail in the wheat is all very visible so I know that's good. You think those are worth more than the buck or so I was guessing?

Holy crap! My grandfather who passed away almost 15 years ago was a big collector. I thought he just collected stamps and some precious metals. But, when my mother found out about my addiction to buying roman denarii she bequeathed me his US coin collection and I'm still having an orgasm over this. I still have to catalog it, and I'll post it all here when I'm done but this is loving amazing. From a bigass 1852 penny, all the way through bi-centenial quarters (i know aren't valuable) and eisenhower dollars with everything in between. I've got a pile of indian head pennies, and even a 1857 eagle penny! mercury dimes, V nickels, steel pennies out the rear end, buffalo nickels, pre-64 dimes and quarters, wheat pennies and even two super tiny civil war coins I don't even know wtf they are (just has a star of david design obverse and united states of america printed in the legend) I am so loving excited, I can't wait to figure out what all this is and share it with everyone!!

Jimmy James posted:It sounds like those super tiny civil war coins could be silver 3 cent coins. They're pretty cool and can be pretty valuable. Cool!!! Out of everything I've looked at that's probably the single most valuable coin by far even in its current condition. Unfortunately it's decently worn, and even more unfortunately a wee bit bent But still valuable I'm sure. Also found an 1834 British 1 1/2 pence. And that's got a punch through it probably to string it around a chain so that definitely knocks the value but still a cool piece. Gonna photograph and post them all when I have some time when I'm not stupid busy, so probably this weekend! Didn't think I cared this much about US currency but I'm as excited as I'd be every time I pick up a new ancient coin.

Ok lots of big images coming up! Apologies for some crappiness in the photos. I did a little research on the coins myself and for the most part they're nothing special beyond what they are but of course any insight I might have missed is always welcome! This really worn down coin is a 1944 venezuela 1/4 bolivar. Odd find since my grandfather hasn't been to Venezuela. Or really anywhere other than NYC, Atlantic city, or Florida. Mercury dimes. I already have one of these, pulled it out of my change but love having more. Liberty nickels Buffalo nickels. Ike Dollars. All but 2 are bicentenials. Couple Denver mints, all Type 2. No silvers War nickels Indian head pennies. The 1861 on top is the nicest one, still shows detail between feather headdress, the rest all vary in quality all the way down to crap on the 2 at the bottom Two more indian heads, decent quality. A large cent. What I *THINK* might be a 1926 nickel but I can't be 100% sure, the date is heavily worn, might be '36. 1857 eagle penny. the little coin punched through is an 1834 british 1 1/2 pence. The little star coin next to that is a US 1861 silver 3 cent that's a little bent. I also found a '58 dime, '64 quarter, '67 kennedy, a couple wheat pennies, and a lot of fairly corroded steel war pennies Oh and my grandfather put a '40 nickel in a coin flip, but from what I can tell it just looks like any old nickel, there's nothing special about those is there? Forgot to take a picture of it. And a list of all the coins and dates and mints that I could tell. And some estimated values I think might be in line with what I could expect? nickel 1942 P 1943 P 1943 S ike 1976 D T2 $3 apiece 1976 D T2 1976 D T2 1976 D T2 1976 D T2 1976 D T2 1976 T2 $2 apiece 1976 T2 1976 T2 1976 T2 1977 1978 D large cent 1852 $15 indian penny 1859 $1 apiece 1861 1862 1868 -- $7 1884 1886 poor 1890 poor 1896 1899 1902 x2 1904 x2 1907 x5 1908 1909 flying eagle penny 1857 $10 3 cent piece 1862 $4 1 1/2 pence 1834 liberty nickel 1905 $1 apiece 1908 1910 x3 1911 buffalo nickel 1920 $4 apiece 1924 x3 1925 1927 x2 1929 x3 1930 x2 1934 1936 x3 1937 x2 1939 unknown x2 1944 venezuela 1/4 bolivar
