e: Also, it's way more derivative of Lights-era Ellie Goulding than Hayley Williams.

i had to basically sit and do nothing for two hours tonight so i took that opportunity to listen to Lover, it's a very big album. I actually liked Me and You Need to Calm Down more in context (although i got excited when i saw that "HEY KIDS, SPELLING IS FUN" was taken out and disappointed when it popped up anyways), and there are some songs I liked a lot on first listen and some I didn't like so much. I still think her singing about her reputation/people who don't like her is cringe as hell, but the love songs are fun (aside from London Boy, but that song gets a pass because it's just goofy instead), but I think my early pick for best song is Soon You'll Get Better. She's got the Dixie Chicks backing her up but a song about her mother's illness is a glimpse into a new side of Taylor, and it's another one of those great songs she makes that are relatable to everyone who's ever had a relative who got a cancer diagnosis, but still filled with the little specificities of her life that bring it all together.

Other potential highlights:
Death by A Thousand Cuts
It's Nice to Have a Friend
I Think He Knows
Paper Rings
The Man
Lover
The Archer
False God
Cruel Summer

I think going to 18 songs was a mistake, there are probably a few I would have taken off, but i also imagine that the spread is wide enough that everyone would have a different 3-5 songs they'd take off.

Cruel Summer is a loving smash

From looking up the situation surrounding the current circumstance, it seems Scott Borchetta took advantage of her lack of industry knowledge back in the day and essentially coerced her into signing over her masters. Then he sold them to Scooter Braun behind her back, something he didn't even deny doing because he allegedly offered her a "fair" deal- this "fair" deal was that she would retain one master for every new track she recorded for them, new tracks which she would not own, which is a completely ridiculous feedback loop. She was NOT given the opportunity to just buy the masters back as many many artists do once they hit the big time, they refused to give her this choice. She chose to walk away instead of taking this deal and staying under their thumb and so they retained the licensing for her older stuff. Now they are holding it over her head, presumably because a) they want to retain the rights to her older music to continue to profit off of it and b) they are out of touch millionaire men with the opportunity to control a woman

Really messed up stuff like a decade plus in the making, these dudes can go to hell

It's mostly Borchetta being a super huge bitch. Scooter Braun is a douche, but I think he just made a business decision. Even without Taylor, that label still has Florida Georgia Line, Thomas Rhett and other country acts who basically print money.

Borchetta seems to be on this big "I made you" revenge push when, in reality, she's the main reason he didn't fall flat on his rear end with this venture.

Teenage Dream was pretty much the perfect album at the perfect time and its success was too big for anyone to follow IMO.

I mean, 5 #1s and they left Hummingbird Heartbeat on the table.

The problem was they launched straight into Prism and it was totally different so it threw people off. If they’d chilled out for a while after the extended edition of Teenage Dream, I think it would’ve been better received but the label got greedy.

Birthday is a bop though.

Yeah but the waters are muddied because Katy Perry had nothing bad to say or any allegations against Dr. Luke. That was explicitly made clear too.

So stupid. Kim's her own deal, I'm not canceling over her who she works with. She's the best pop star to come out in the last few years. The Kesha vs. Dr. Luke has not even been settled and I'm sure is complicated not to defend anyone but cancel culture over a growing trans artist that has far more sway than someone like Dorian Electra or any other trans artist because she doesn't make it a selling point, she relies on her vocal skills which are very good and the sad fact is trans acceptance is still low and the sad fact is she passes better than any other notable trans artist right now. When it comes down to it the songs are excellent and she plays a role in those too, not just Dr. Luke.

Lord Krangdar posted:

The mindset of blaming Petras for Luke's actions is basically the same mindset as victim blaming, just applied to a slightly different situation. Its still ignoring the power dynamic at play, in the exact same way. Right before Petras started working with Luke, she was part of a discriminated against minority, essentially broke and homeless in a foreign country, living on friend's couches. Luke is her boss in the situation. Essentially, she works for an abuser. Not works with. She is in a very vulnerable spot.

And yeah, she could give up her career to avoid Luke. But Kesha could have too, Chen ppl Luke first began abusing her. The point is, neither of them should have to (which is why Kesha pushed through and refused to give up, despite everything going against her). Predatorial men are the ones who need to be pushed out of the entertainment industry, not the women they have power over. That's backwards.

To be clear, I don't care who does or does not choose to listen to Petras' music. Its just troubling that because its so hard to hold powerful men accountable, it's become trendy to attack the nearest vulnerable woman instead.

Nobody’s blaming her for what Luke did. Stop being obtuse.

Predatory men do need pushed out and one of the most effective ways to do that is to stop working with them so they’re not valuable to anyone.

Artists like Kim working with Luke disincentivizes people to push Dr. Luke out.

I get that she has a lot on the line and if she wants to keep working with him, that’s her prerogative, but the fact that she has that choice doesn’t absolve her of helping to keep him relevant.
