I can't say I saw this coming 8 months ago but it's pretty cool.

Is "Same Love" charting? That would be awesome, and also a Lady Gaga-esque achievement of getting a popular song that explicitly addresses gay rights. I haven't heard "Can't Hold Us" much, since it only plays on the the top 40s station that I don't tune to much. "Thrift Shop" and "Same Love" play on the alternative rock station, of all things.

Heard this for the first time on my local alternative station on my way to work. Listened to it over and over at work. Heard it again on the same station at lunch, and I'm sure I'll hear it again driving home. With the way indie/alternative acts have been blowing up lately, I wouldn't be surprised if this song gets huge in the US.

Girl is talented, only 16, and already hit #1 in her native New Zealand.

I heard Lorde's "Royals" on a mainstream pop station for the first time today. Calling it now, it's gonna be huge. Well, I called it a few weeks/pages ago too, but now it's almost certain.

Hmm. Miley Cyrus's new single is surprisingly good. I actually liked "We Can't Stop", but I admit it's a bit inane and doesn't really show off her singing ability. "Wrecking Ball" seems to balance that out, so that makes me look forward to hearing more from her.

The verses remind me of Lana Del Rey, who I don't really like. But the song made me realize that I do like her style, it's the voice that irks me. Miley's vocals, on the other hand, are just great, and I can't wait to see a live version.

I am happy that Wrecking Ball is a ballady song. It's a nice contrast from We Can't Stop. I could really do without the gross sledgehammer licking in the video, but it was directed my Terry Richardson and he's generally a disgusting old perv. :barf:

Yikes. Saw that video last night. Gonna pretend it doesn't exist so I can keep enjoying the song. Although it did spawn some hilarious stuff in the GBS thread.

Speaking of which, I just heard Royals on a semi-local rock station in Northern Wisconsin. I think that's the definitive sign that she's made it.

e: Although, listening to her always makes me feel bad about my 16 year-old self... what was I doing all those years?

Really? I would've thought being #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 was the sign. v:shobon:v Anyway, I totally called it in this thread back in June :smug:

I wonder if it can make it to #1, given that Roar is an awful song, and Wrecking Ball's popularity may be fleeting since the music video was the main force behind its rise to the top.

It's especially weird because I've never seen an actually good SNL performance- something about their sound system or team or acoustics or whatever reduces every band I've seen on there to coming off as awkward and off-rhythm.

Speaking of SNL and pop, I finally got to see Miley's performances from her recent turn hosting (still haven't seen the actual skits, though I really want to). I beg to differ, because both of these are amazing:

Wrecking Ball
We Can't Stop (acoustic!)

This song is so trashy. Why do I like it so much? It must be that synth bass line. And she kinda sounds like Gwen.

Disappointed that that video wasn't "What You Waiting For?"

In other news, TSwift apparently topped the Canadian iTunes charts with 8 seconds of white noise.

I'm probably late to the party, but man, Sam Smith's album is great. I'm pleasantly surprised with how diverse the sound is across the album. While I like the songs of his they play on the radio ("Stay With Me", "I'm Not the Only One"), I was worried the whole thing would be mostly the same. I really wish they'd make "I've Told You Now" into a single.

Is this where I join the Chappell stanclub? Kept seeing stuff about her Tiny Desk in the queer twittersphere but didn't really listen until the past week when I let Spotify make a Loneliest Time playlist instead of repeating. Everytime I heard a song I really dug, it was by her. Now I've probably got dozens of plays on Midwest Princess already.
