It's not as utterly horrible as Friday musically, and she's clearly having fun. It feels way less forced, they're clearly aware of the stupidity going on. I'd probably watch the video again, if nothing else. I smiled.

I'm someone who mostly appreciates pop music as catchy stuff I can listen to without really having to think too hard about artistic meanings and lyrical interpretation, and I really love it. A lot of the time I feel like people get really up themselves about how they're better than "chart crap," and it seems like people are almost searching for a reason to hate gaga. Like, oh no, if I can't hate it for being a shallow cash grab, maybe it's narcissistic or she's playing her image up or, indeed, her fame is "entirely founded on hype". It does sound kind of like a lot of other radio stuff, and that's kind of what pop music is. I don't think anything is abrasive unless you just hate the style or sound.

To me, it seems like there's meanings and morals behind it if you want to search for that stuff, and equally it's something I'm very happy to sing along to very badly if I think I'm alone, or I'm drunk, or I'm just sitting on the train and want something that sounds good in the background.

10/10, definitely my favourite of hers so far. I pretty much had it on loop for a few days, and I'm not sure I could pick a favourite track, but whenever I load up shuffle on my ipod and then skip through 200 songs (as you do), half the time it's a song off ARTPOP that I'm actually stopping and letting play. Actually, I'd be hard pressed to pick a gaga song I could genuinely say I didn't at least like. There's some stuff I'd probably get rid off when I need to clear some ipod space, but there's not a dud track I'd have said to just cut.

Anyone know a good site for checking out global charts? I was watching a youtube channel that listed global number ones every week, but that got shut for copyright stuff (understandable, I guess). I've found loads of interesting stuff I wouldn't normally have come across. Is there something easier than having to go to fifty different chart websites individually, when half the time it's just seeing that Roar is somehow still incredibly popular everywhere?

Yeah, it's hardly her best work (maybe I've just grown up a little though), but the rest of the album is okay. Honestly, it doesn't actually sound too terrible in my opinion. If it was from someone else, and not about weird hello kitty poo poo, it'd be okay. It wouldn't seem too out of place on some jpop compilation. I'd rather she do something more in character, but I don't hate it. It sounds okay, and I'm not going to demand high art of my dumb pop music.

More Taylor Swift came at midnight last night. It's here: http://www.stereogum.com/1712817/taylor-swift-welcome-to-new-york/mp3s/

I think it's my favourite of the three so far. I wasn't overly hopeful when Shake It Off first turned up, but now I'm really way more excited than I should be.

Has Ronson done a bunch of other work with Mars? Maybe it's some sort of trade or something. I don't know if that happens, but that's honestly just about the only thing that really makes sense in my mind.

Is there anyone who isn't in the Bad Blood video? It's a neverending stream of posters of more people.

Also, that poster doesn't seem to be available in the UK :(. If anyone knows a way to get it here, please dish for me.

Yeah, the video is kind of cool, but also a bit of a mess. It really does feel like a trailer. I'll hold out hope for a surprise feature length version with a story and whatnot.

I think I'm warming up to Bad Blood as a song though.

I was going to add to this, but at this point we may as well just post the track listing.

They're all really good.

Holy poo poo that's a good album.

In non CRJ stuff, I've been listening to Queen of the Clouds a lot lately, and it's also really good.

If you're not into heavily commercialised lab music, maybe the pop music thread isn't for you? I mean, this thread is mostly talking about huge chart artists with large amounts of money pushing them around. The only way it could be any more manufactured is if we veered into jpop/kpop idol stuff.

Deformed Church
May 12, 2012

5'5", IQ 81

I freely admit to not knowing a huge amount about the music industry, but isn't most of the top 40 stuff this thread tends to focus on all passed by a dozen focus groups? There's no way people aren't running Katy Perry and Kesha and Charli XCX and people like that through this stuff, right? For all their image, I think I'd be pretty surprised if people like Taylor Swift and Adele weren't also having their stuff run by some manager telling them what to put on the album and what's a single and what can go in the bin or get held back for some concert.

To me, that post kind of seems like me going into the metal thread and saying "do they have to shout so much?" Am I that off base with the way the music industry is at the pop level?

For what it's worth, I don't really care what's behind my music, I just like putting nice sounds into my ears and I think Emotion has a lot of nice sounds on it.

The Sheeran song is okay, but it's not really award worthy. It's pretty good at what it does, it's just that what it does is boring and played out. It's the Nickelback of pop ballads.

edit: also, it's better than see you again so they could have made a worse decision.

Per twitter, seems like the Ke$ha case is not going her way. Seeing conflicting reports on exactly what's happened but they're all either saying she's not getting out or that there's no decision yet. Basically all :negative:

According to this Rolling Stone article and some other stuff I've read, the judge has denied an injunction that would allow her to record music outside of her current contract, which requires six more albums with Dr Luke's label. As I understand it, the final verdict on the abuse itself is still in limbo pending more evidence from Kesha's end, but the request for an injunction in the meantime is denied. I think that means that there's still a case to be heard on the abuse, but she won't be able to work until that's done. I assume that if she wins that, she'll then get out of the contract anyway, but I don't really know much about her contract or the contract law surrounding it so...

He's worked with a hell of a lot of people, but Gaga isn't one of them. According to a rep (of his) when that accusation happened:

quote:

Luke met Lady GaGa twice for less than half an hour total in those two meetings combined. He has never been alone with her and never touched her. Neither meeting was in that time frame reported.

Looking at their discographies on wikipedia, she's not listed anywhere on his, nor him on hers.

Deformed Church
May 12, 2012

I think that's pretty much what happened. Gaga said she'd been abused, the lawyer went and talked about how it was totally Dr Luke and then Gaga's people turned around and told him "no, stop being a loving idiot."

I feel bad for Kesha that she's managed to land herself such an idiot as a lawyer.

Lily Allen's second and third albums are still pretty good, but definitely less interesting. Duffy and Kate Nash, on the other hand as far as I can tell from both my memory and wikipedia, they were basically one hit wonder situations. I really like Mercy and Foundations, but neither of them seemed to have produced much else of note. If we're talking about female solo artists who boomed and then vanished in the mid noughties, though, how about Katie Melua and Gabriella Cilmi?

edit: That said, I do like Warwick Avenue from Duffy.

This release is confusing me.

I get that she'd rather push sales than streams and I'm happy to help her there, but they also seem to be pushing it on loving CD format? The only place I can find it for digital download is iTunes, and since I don't own an apple device I'd be stuck spending my money on and then extricating it from the worst piece of desktop software in the world. Outside of that, amazon have the CD but unlike most things they don't also give the mp3 version, I assume because that would mix it in with their streaming service. If I did buy that, I'd also have to wait for shipping, and I don't actually know anywhere around here that does CDs except discounted racks of Now Thats What I Call Summer Hits 2014 and Guns N Roses Greatest Hits, and even after getting my hands on the CD I've got the thorny issue of having decided I probably didn't need a CD player because it's loving 2017.

Is my situation way more specific than I think? Is there a distribution channel I'm missing? Is this just a weirdly limited release?
