A lot of implications here for fighting Davy, wow. Also it looks like things are going to go down pretty much immediately after the PTA meeting -- wonder if they'll run into the Death Cult.

Tenebrais posted:

Not that we need any additional confirmation but Shrike has ice-blue eyes like Cody. I wonder if that scar across her left eye is also from Davy's hooksword?

And now we know why it was expressly forbidden for Cody's guards to tell him about the werewolf.

Some A lot of speculative wondering and between-lines-reading here:

1. "Testing that was the first hurdle my plan had to clear!" re: whether Hi/Jack could control Cody's body. Looks like he's going to use them to override Davy's commanding power over Cody. Bodyjacking the bodyjacker, pretty clever.

2. The goldfish. None of the spectrals could see Hijack back in Chapter 5 as long as he was possessing someone. It seems likely Cody is going to use the goldfish to sneak Hi/Jack into the PTA meeting later that day, and then escape Davy's control. Probably the school itself is important to the plan (as we learned in Chapter 5, Cody has dominion over the school), otherwise he could just use them right now to escape the house. Maybe Davy's guards aren't allowed into the school? In Chapter 6 we saw that Davy himself went to check on Cody instead of any of his guards. Chapter 7 showed that Davy has no problem ordering his guards and thralls to do his dirty work for him.
2a. I wonder if Davy will be at Mayview Middle again for the PTA meeting despite Cody banishing him? Will Cody attempt to use Davy's hook to sever Davy's vampiric dominion? Can it even do that? We've seen it can split things into parts but not necessarily destroy them. The Great Sphinx was split into (at least) four sphinxes, not quite destroyed.

3. "The last thing my dad doesn't know... that I know my mom's still alive!" At the beginning of this scene we see Jack reading the newspaper, with a very conspicuous headline of "MYSTERIOUS BEAST SIGHTED". There's a cutout portion of the front page (with the second page showing Coach Oop got an award). Guess that's a picture of the Shrike werewolf. How he recognized her in werewolf form I'm not sure, especially as it's a B&W paper so he wouldn't have recognized the blue eye. Maybe he recognized the hairstyle? The scar?

4. Cody's reflection shows a very different Cody. One fang is visible, his hair is smooth and and combed, and he's visibly not cheerful. We know Cody's personality is largely an act, but what if it's an act commanded by Davy? "Be a good, cheerful son" seems like the kinda thing he'd insist on and that'd be something that a mopey Alucard-like would chafe badly at.
4a. There's loooads of instances in Chapter 5 of Cody going dark-and-brooding and even sulky before snapping back into his cheerful act. [1][2][3][4]

5. Cody mentions offhand that Davy had no idea that Cody could use the hook's powers. "That thing's only ever been a sharp hunk of spirit-slicing metal in my hands until... well, you!" Has Davy used Cody before to destroy spirits? Or maybe loaned the hook to him so he could destroy a spirit inside Mayview Middle School without Davy encroaching upon the place? Cody has obvious experience echolocating spirits (as well as taunting them into replying) before attacking them.

6. Jeff has mothers, plural, and they make garlic bread. If not for this comic showing that basically everyone has parents involved in the Mayview Backstory, I wouldn't even think of speculating this. But Crush and Jeff have the same hair color, and someone has to be the biological father, right?

Ooh, interesting...

So there's one other little connection I learned that hasn't become relevant yet.

The book that Eightfold had possessed, when she wasn't altering its appearance, is titled "On the Birth of Gods", the author being Dr (hard to tell, might just say "by") A. Beaumont. There's only two spots to see its cover:
https://www.paranatural.net/comic/chapter-4-page-40
https://www.paranatural.net/comic/chapter-4-page-94

Underneath the author, there's a little motif of a little Pac-Man ghost shape surrounded by decorative swirls. Not much to note, except this design also shows up over the front door of a certain house:
https://www.paranatural.net/comic/chapter-3-page-35
https://www.paranatural.net/comic/chapter-5-page-9

With a better view of this Pac-Man-ghost-shape, you can see it's got one eye and a couple of scars.

This may be a stretch, but I'm wondering this design could represent Cody's mom. Unless I totally missed something, we don't know her actual name; Shrike is just a nickname, named for the butcher bird that skewers small animals on thorns to eat later. But she's got the one eye and the scars. The little notebook "Notes on Monsters + the Murder Thereof" shows she WOULD be taking copious notes on monsters and the like, and authoring a book wouldn't be too out of the question. And with the whole "This was just like Castlevania" line, Beaumont would be a pretty good analogue to Belmont...

Wait, if going to the PTA meeting is "step 1: piss off Dad", and Hijack is meant to puppeteer him later, when he's grounded... isn't it kind of a huge risk to bring hijack along during step 1? There's no way they don't end up separated before the plan's ready.

Seems like he's counting on Davy not personally escorting him back into his locked vault of a bedroom, and is planning to escape in between the command and actually going home.

Carrying Hijack along is the only emergency insurance Cody has against a sudden command he doesn't anticipate.

It's interesting that during Hitball, Davy shows up soon but not immediately. So mortal danger (and high intensity exercise) has some limits.

I'm guessing Davy's got some sort of gym class exception? Cody may have supernatural stamina but raising his heart rate is literally the point of it.

on one hand, Cody is really underthinking this

on the other hand, he's a kid looking for his mum

hitball arc suggests he coasts a lot on his supernatural abilities and isn't the Dmitri-type overthinker

maybe he just hasn't realized that bringing Hijack out with him might be a bad idea, given that Davy can instantly see Hijack floating around whilst Cody has to echolocate

Well if the Hijacks are able to stay in the fish and not doing anything suspicious they should be fine.

Though I'm guessing he's going to need them to do something tonight so whatever that is could put them at risk. Since otherwise it makes no sense to bring the hijacks at all.

I don't have any interesting insights, but looks like we have the last piece of the sphere-chimera from the chapter title page. Unless the eyeball in the middle is still unaccounted-for? That central eye is the eye of a Wight. It looks just like Sandman's, but probably represents the Wight in Mayview.

It's been implied/hinted at before, but I think now with the Witch being confirmed to be an "ancient parasite", and Davy's offhand comment about her stealing bodies, I think DuNacht is the latest host for the Witch. As her powers rebuilt DuNacht began looking more and more like the Witch, which explains why Mina immediately recognized her.

Also, this page giving exactly equal panel time to both Davy and DuNacht. Here are our two main villains, boys & girls.

I just want to say that I lost the better part of my afternoon re-reading everything from Davy menacingly monologuing to Hijack until the current update because of this post. Zack really is a fantastic storyteller and I'm glad the switch to text + images is working out for them. One thing I realized I'd missed was the flashback to Isaac encountering Boss Leader and the realization that she isn't a medium at all, just Sandman's avatar for the consortium Changes a lot and makes the one Agent that was conscripted to Master Guerra's dojo after her defeat make a lot more sense to me now.

Yeah, I agree with Skull that Devilora is a host or some disguise for Fauxbia, the latter is made of yarn and the former was bribing the sphinxes with what is apparently rare spectral yarn balls.

The pages Skull posted also show Devilora using yarn to wrap up Johnny and R.J. We also saw her winding back some unseen strings when entering the pool to negotiate with the Sphixes. Whatever Devilora is, that patchwork monster most likely knows exactly what that fish is. or maybe we'll see the sphinxes were able to play a bit of a game on her to mislead her on the target. I could forsee her being tricked into picking a fight with Davy if she were convinced abducting or otherwise putting Cody in harms way would suit her ultimate goals.

I can tell you right away that I'm reasonably certain it hasn't been directly mentioned in the story thus far.

We do know Eightfold was given to Isabel by Angel Guerra via Rick, though, and we know that Master Guerra, Davy, and the Witch all worked together to destroy the Great Sphinx. We also know Eightfold is familiar with how Master Guerra treats spirits. It's not unreasonable to infer that Eightfold also is aware of Davy and the Witch.

Given how a lot of the other characters have been revealed to be involved with each other (Davy/Shrike, Rick/Jean, Agent Summers/Mr. Puckett, et al), there's a nonzero possibility that the person with black fingernails and black spectral energy is/was Master Guerra's wife. Angel did say he got his black spectral energy from his mother, and that it upset Master Guerra.

I would assume a spirit that has died or gone kaput for good would no longer fear Fauxbia and thus she’d lose their powers.

In which case we could infer that every spirit shown there is alive…not gone…active?

Also Phantomine has to be related to Fauxbia, right? One copies powers through trust, and the other through fear?

Speaking of which, aside from Truth and Eightfold, you can see what probably is Quiz Knight next to Eightfold (judging from the ?-motif visor and sword).

The other spirits to get detailed designs are a rokurokubi (below Hijack), a chef (left of Hijack), and some sort of horned lizard/alligator (right). Doorman said that Candlepin/Facade/Quiz Knight were eaten by the Witch.

I wonder if Fearsay/Peekaboo are related? Everyone else mentioned there is now accounted for.
