Slightly cheesy powermetal counts as art, right? Listening to Blind Guardian is what got my mom into Tolkien, and she gave me a copy of The Silmarillion after we went to see The Hobbit

I've moved onto Fellowship now, and knowing the history of the land and the people beforehand really adds to the experience for me. I think you could definitely read some of the shorter stories in The Silmarillion separately if reading the entire book feels like a chore.
