Cemetry Gator posted:One of the best psychedelic albums out there are the two Duke of Stratosphere releases. Basically, in their mid-80s lull, XTC decided to make an EP that parodied and pay homage to the music they loved growing up, and throughout the six songs, they took on stuff like the Electric Prunes, Sid Barret era Pink Floyd, and of course the Beatles. Then they released an album after their breakthrough "Skylarking" that threw in a bit of Small Faces' "Ogden Gone Nut Flake" and the Hollies and the Beach Boys. These albums are so completely dead-on that whenever the Amboy Dukes' Journey to the Center of the Mind comes up on my randomized playlists it takes me a while to realize it isn't XTC.

I've been listening to and enjoying Dead Meadow for much of the last decade. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Y2ZRU11xtc Radio Moscow has a pretty awesome sound and I really need to listen to more of them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCsTd4UrvtY The Atomic Bitchwax is a side project from musicians of other bands, notably some members of Monster Magnet. Though they skew a bit more metal their first album has a very psychedelic feel to it. In my opinion there's a drop off in quality after the first album and I haven't really listened to much else by them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiIY1j0qJDA The guys who did the backing music for that Pikachu on Acid youtube video seriously need to write and release an album. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rClzjXNAB9M

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyoGGimJHFc Octopus was from the weird transitional phase when the average, drugged-out hippy was moving from poo poo like the Beatles to poo poo like Pink Floyd or King Crimson. The band released one album and then stopped giving any sort of poo poo about the project. The two best things are A) Whoever does that drumming is ridiculous (The good type of ridiculous.) and B) They sound freakishly like the Beatles in so many ways, my friend actually thought the vocalist was John Lennon after listening to around 5 of the songs. They do sound like the unbirthable offspring of John and Paul though in a way, so the guess wasn't too far off.

Here's an instrumental piece from a psych-pop band I like a lot, Citay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wA7VTrGIxXY. They haven't recorded anything since 2010 and haven't toured since mid-2012 but I'm still hopeful that they'll do more stuff. Here's another song by Citay, with vocals this time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0Omj0Dw3PM. A band I just heard for the first time and enjoyed a lot, Wooden Shjips, just released a new album which they're streaming for free here: http://www.theguardian.com/music/musicblog/2013/nov/04/wooden-shjips-back-to-land-album-stream Howlin' Rain is a cool enough band, if you're all about the classic psych fuzz stuff you might not like 'em so much, I dunno, give 'em a shot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sn-XlWowvlo Dunno if you folks like Neil Young at all, but late last year he released an album called Psychedelic Pill. It's not entirely a psychedelic album, but the first song on it, Driftin' Back, is a 27-minute psychedelic whopper in which ol' Neil complains about his hatred of MP3s and other things: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmHljOmSw6I And just for funzies, here's Adult Acid by Thee Oh Sees: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JqaQMZeWQw. They've made a few albums but the only one I can get into is The Master's Bedroom Is Worth Spending a Night In. Oh, and because I'm stupid I almost left out a local fave of mine, Chicago-based psych band Secret Colours: http://vimeo.com/67926553 most erotic flower fucked around with this message at 02:03 on Nov 5, 2013 |

Anybody else listening to Al Lover? He does a lot of remixes of psychedelic and garage bands and had a new thing out last July called the ever so imaginative Remixes. Most of his music is up on his bandcamp here and is mostly name your own price. Just check out Ragged Glory, it's the high water mark for Crazy Horse material in my opinion.

If his catalog has more of this stuff I'll need to check him out. Some of his stuff with Buffalo Springfield and Crosby Stills Nash and Young was considered psychedelic, and before that, he was in a band called The Squires which recorded a few surf-rock tunes, and I think surf-rock is always at least a little psychedelic. Here's a squires song, if you wanna hear them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyi_uSI1cSk Anyway, a lot of folks tend to agree with LordPants about Ragged Glory being the best Crazy Horse album, but I think their debut album, Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, is the best thing they ever did. If you got ten minutes of silence that you need to put sound in, just fill it with this here song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1gxkRve4Q0 Oh, and as long as I'm yammering about stuff I might as well throw in another recommendation: just listened to Born and Thrown on a Hook last night by Drink Up Buttercup and I can tell you from personal experience that it is great music to listen to while you're walking around Target. Probably other grocery stores would work just as well, though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRaLxVaD5Ic most erotic flower fucked around with this message at 07:38 on Nov 6, 2013 |

I've been getting super into Of Montreal lately, and this song, called "Gelid Ascent" is probably the most psychedelic song Kevin Barnes has put out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uot7UGIWRHw Their whole album Paralytic Stalks is a pretty crazy psychedelic journey. There's also Mercury Rev, the sorta sister band to The Flaming Lips. Jonathan Donahue was in both bands for a while, before completely taking over Mercury Rev and kinda ruining it. Their first two albums are amazing, though. Here's a cool song called "Frittering." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4o5ph-uj7E I feel like Spiritualized and Spacemen 3 need a mention too. Both bands are fronted by the same guy and they do some amazing stuff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-A0NdCq8KQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzwpaIHknN4

Good thread. Second'd on Spacemen 3, Black Angels, etc. Also, if you like lo-fi, nightmarish psychedelia, the Hospitals' "Hairdryer Peace" is a great one. You have to give it some time to sink in, but it rewards multiple listens, and there are some catchy, even head nod-worthy melodies buried within its harrowing blasts of noise. Here's a good review of it, and here's one of its most "accessible" "songs." Also also, has anyone else ever tried to listen to To Live and Shave in L.A.'s "The Wigmaker in Eighteenth Century Williamsburg?" This is one of the most--if not the most--psychedelic albums I've ever heard, but goddamn, I find it impenetrable. And it's like two-and-a-half hours long! Here's a sample.

As much as I like Madlib, this is a pretty uncreative use of one of Van Dyke Parks' best songs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3eFNx782Cg Song Cycle is one of the great, unsung psych/baroque pop albums. It's difficult to accurately describe the album's sound--it's kind of like a fusion of post-acid Beach Boys, turn-of-the-century pop, Charles Ives and some Mothers-style studio fuckery thrown in for good measure. Lyrically, it's incredibly dense. Parks has named Lawrence Ferlinghetti and James Joyce as two of his biggest influences on his early lyrics, and I don't think the comparison is too far off. Every line is packed with puns, obtuse wordplay, and double or triple meanings, examining America's military history, civil rights, and the creative bankruptcy of the music industry in the process (though it's worth noting that Song Cycle was, at the time, the most expensive album ever produced). It's a wonderful and rewarding piece of work, and I urge everyone to listen to it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_e4ojq-dqq8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-90icZd-0s
