Okay so Guy Goodbody suggested I post this here. I'll be doing a big post about it in GBS soon, but it seems very specifically relevant to your collective interests so I figured I'd give you a sneak peak.

Here's the thing though: I'm hoping this doesn't escape from the forums into the world at large until it's a little more done, so do try to keep it within SA for now.

I've been chopping up Dan Carlin podcasts and reassembling them into a different story. Currently it's called Hardcore Prophecy: The Trump of Doom. Some of you may remember a project like this called Son of Strelka that I did a few years back with Obama's autobiography. This one is much more dark, violent, and flat-out nasty. It's an alternate history story in which Donald Trump declares himself to be the new Messiah and becomes prophet-king of the USA. The results are, of course, mandatory congressional orgies in public, nationwide cannibalism along party lines, and good old fashioned nukes. Here's a quick video showing how it's done:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTSFDMfEjqQ

And here's a quick preview of poo poo getting crazy from a few months ago (it's changed a bit now):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axR8dB2pjow

Chapters are getting finished out of order, unfortunately, but if you don't mind that you can find some of them on my soundcloud. Or you can subscribe to the soundcloud as a podcast here.

Holy crap you're the guy who did Son of Strelka? poo poo dude The Scientist and Departures are two of my favourite albums; I'm pumped for this.

I really don't think Mike Duncan is going to talk about his favourite revolution, the reason he started the Revolutions podcast, in such a bone-headed way.

I'm getting tired of long form investigative true crime podcasts. I've listened to three of them and they were each like ten hours long and they all ended the same way

poo poo town was kind of a cool inversion on that. There was a crime here and the authorities in town might be covering it up? Actually, there wasn't, but the guy who reported this lived a crazy life before he suddenly died so let's explore that instead. Besides that though, I've always found the idea of the genre somewhere between ghoulish and pointless.

I think I dropped Revolutions somewhere in Haiti. I'm debating starting Haiti from scratch or just jumping to the Bolivarian episodes and doubling back to Haiti later when I run out of Revolutions.

Haiti was interesting but the fact that I didn't know about it at all ahead of time meant that it was terrible commute listening because I needed to pay full attention to it. An episode would end and I'd be like "wait... what?"

The "let's just scramble between the revolution and now" in Haiti is probably my favourite single work Mike Duncan has done. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop and Haiti to get better :smith:

Facebook news did spoil a biography of Mikhail Gorbachev for me, and I was a strangely upset about it. They mentioned how Boris Yeltsin got into power and I’m just at that point in the book where the two men are getting increasingly aggressive towards eachother.

I am legitimately curious what happens to Marquis de Lafayette though. He’s right at that point where everyone in France hates him and his previous fame from the American Revolution isn’t doing him any favors.

but yes that previous post was a joke

Good news: Mike Duncan is writing a biography on Lafayette, so you'll be able to find out soon enough.

The natural tendency of all history podcasts is for the episodes to balloon in length overtime. Eventually we'll just be listening to a livestream of Duncan and Carlin rambling incoherently about Romans.

I don't think that is some deep mystery. Just look at the Philippines. Middle class women are perfectly willing to ignore misogynist statements if they believe a politician will "solve crime" AKA re-implement the bloody code AKA kill all criminals. See, I had a completely different assumption than you (fear of retributatuve make violence) so I think it actually is a pretty interesting question.
