In all fairness, Dan Carlin is a lot better on pronunciation than Mike Duncan is in the History of Rome.

Duncan called Hannibal Barca and the rest of the Barca clan "Baraca" and still hasn't stopped up to the episode I'm on (around the start of Augustus' reign). He also had to be corrected by readers for a bunch of super basic pronunciations, like plebeians. Not a big deal, but it seems like Dan is a bit more on point with the pronunciations.

I like how Dan uses the hard C instead of G for Roman names. It's a pick and choose situation and most people today would say something like Gaius instead of Caius. Or the way he pronounces something like Lucius with the hard C. I dunno why, but I like it with the hard C.

I really am enjoying History of Rome, but man does Duncan's lecture style delivery get a bit old sometimes. Especially when he's trying to interject some of his attempts at humor or sarcasm into the show, it comes off really poorly. I guess the lecture style is a double edged sword though, because with the dryness of the style comes the advantage of a whole hell of a lot more information about all the events and stuff than you get with Dan's freewheelin' style.

If you pulled my leg I'd pick Dan's style over it any day, but I'm glad both exist. Listening to Mike Duncan's take on the fall of republican Rome then listening to Dan's series on the same really complimented each other. With Duncan you get a great, if dry, overview of all the important events and lives of the important figures, then with Dan you get his crazy "WHAT IS IT LIKE TO FIGHT AN ELEPHANT IN HAND TO HAND COMBAT? AGI-YUN, AND AGI-YUN, AND AGI-YUN?" style which humanizes the story and brings it to life.

God I loving love Hardcore History so much :3:

I guess it's just me, but those jokes usually, not always, but usually fall really flat to me. To each his own.

As a side note holy poo poo Kirk Douglas is still alive?

Dan suggested giving control over a single nuke to two countries, so that both countries would have to turn the key so to speak, which would provide a measure of deterrance to the russians invading. For example, giving a single bomb between two baltic nations.

His idea was that Americans don't give a poo poo about Latvia and countries like that, since we have no skin in the game. Even if they have Article 5 NATO protection, he said we would never start WW3 to protect them from the Russians. So, giving groups of countries single nukes for deterrence was his idea.

He revised his theory last episode, I forgot what he said though. Something about Sweden controlling it or some poo poo.

Crazy or not it's not exactly any more crazy than NATO handing article 5 protections out like candy when everyone knows the American people aren't gonna want to start WW3 over some country they have never heard of.

Also, these were the first few Common Sense podcasts I've checked out, and I rather like them. Even if I don't necessarily agree with his Politics 100% of the time, I appreciate the great historical backgrounds he uses to explain poo poo. He always gives great historical context to stuff.

Yesssss, just as I was about 30 min from finishing the last episode. I was seriously worried about life without hardcore history anymore, now at least that's delayed by another 4 hours or so!

I think if you took any one of the last dozen episodes or so and made a mega-cut of every time he says "again and again" or makes a boxing analogy, it would be 15 minutes in itself.

He's come a long way. (Just kidding I love Dan, even, hell especially, his quirks).

Has anyone listened to the History of WWII podcast by Ray Harris Jr.? Is it any good and worth investing my time in? I'm very interested in the subject however I want to make sure I'm listening to a quality interpretation of events and not some amateur hour stuff. Would appreciate any opinions.

I've listened to a bit of the first episode and it seems ok, but I could use some good reviews as motivation to get through it because of how annoyingly loud the dudes breathing is. It only took a couple of minutes for it to drive me crazy. The guy takes a super loud quick and sharp intake of air like twice every sentence and it's super loving distracting. Who breathes like that, really? It's so terrible. He better stop doing that as the show goes on because no matter how good the content is it's practically a deal breaker in itself.

I don't think it's nearly as bad as you are describing it. He maybe returns to the theme of it being an overwhelming story to tell here and there, and sure you're gonna get a boxing analogy every 2-3 hours, but the last show was chock full of history. From Verdun, to the naval battle I forgot the name of, to the Somme, all full of amazing quotes from soldiers, historians, generals, and leaders of the time. Throw in some amazing facts and descriptions of the magnitude of the war, plus, yes, some misery porn (but come one, it's one of the worst shared human experiences in history), and you have what is a pretty drat comprehensive and impressive 4 hours of history. It's really a marvelous piece of work and I couldn't imagine the effort it takes to put together so far a 16 hour narrative of WW1. It's just plain impressive.

Looks like we aren't gonna get a pre-Christmas surprise Hardcore History.

On the bright side, it can't be more than a few weeks or a month at the most before he's done with the next episode, right?

1066 is another fun little history book about A Year.

History is so dope that I dunno how you can't like it. I mean, the poo poo that has happened. It's nuts.

nthing Ghosts of the Ostfront. If you only listen to one Hardcore History, make it that one. Although you won't just listen to one because Hardcore History owns bones. (Get it? Bones? That's my little depressing joke referencing the opening of Ghosts of the Ostfront).

Logical insanity was an awesome episode as well, though it isn't a WW2 history narrative it tackles issues from the war. Highly interesting stuff.

Eh, I don't think it was meant to be taken 100% literally, though. Maybe I'm wrong, it's been a while since I listened to the episode.
