Speaking as someone who's moving immigrating to Vancouver from London (UK) this summer, this thread has provided interesting reading.

It was obvious that the current market was a bubble, but I didn't realise quite how bad it is. It probably doesn't help that living in London has pre-conditioned me to think that spending $500-600k on a two bedroom apartment is perfectly acceptable and normal.

We'll be renting for at least the worst year, so hopefully the market takes a nosedive during that time. We're ultimately hoping to buy a place in Kits, but expecting the prices to bottom out there is probably too good to be true.

What's your occupation? Did you take a pay cut?

I work in IT, in support/sysadmin roles. I currently have a fairly decent job in London and 10+ years of experience, but I'm aware that I'll almost certainly be taking a pay cut, and it'll be harder to find a job than it is over here. Luckily, between myself and my wife, we have enough savings to cover us entirely for a year whilst we get settled in. Also, if/when the Vancouver housing market shits itself, we'll have around $200k set aside (from selling our apartment here) for a deposit on a place.

Presumably this place was cheap as gently caress, hence the crowd. Still, pretty harrowing.

Does Vancouver not have a good job market then? I heard in the "Ask me about living in Canada" thread that Van is actually not that great to live in because of a combination of sky-high property prices and things like crazy traffic these days, if it doesn't have a good job market either then I guess Van is definitely off the list for potential places to move.

UK ex-pat here. Formally lived in London, and have been a PR in Canada (Vancouver, specifically) for the past 5 years. Currently going through the citizenship process.

Firstly, the housing situation in Vancouver isn't great. I've been following this thread since it's inception and, like most folks, totally expected the bubble to burst in that time. Unfortunately, it has not, and housing prices are now fairly ridiculous - although not as ridiculous as they are in the UK. Renting a decent place for not-outrageous money is still possible, and buying a place in the 'burbs shouldn't be out of reach for someone who is selling their UK property.

That said, this thread is comically negative about Vancouver, to the point where it projects a distorted caricature which is basically unrecognizable to me. Honestly, it makes notorious shithole r/vancouver seem positive by comparison. Despite it's flaws, Vancouver is actually a really great place to live, and the standard of living I have now is a vast improvement from what I had in London. I don't regret my move in the slightest, and can never see myself moving back to the UK (actually posting from the UK right now during my annual trip back, and I can't wait to get back on the plane).

In terms of work, it'll probably depend on what sector you're in, but I've had an overwhelmingly positive experience. I came to Canada as your standard IT helpdesk guy earning an 'ok-ish' London salary, and was able to fall into a great tech job, which then opened up a number of doors, and I now earn multiple times what I was getting in London after you convert from dollars to pounds, and I'm confident that there's significant upward movement from there if/when i change jobs again. From a career perspective, moving to Vancouver was the best this I ever did. Every tech company is desperately trying to hire, and there's a real lack of decent candidates. Whilst you might not earn as much as a US based counterpart, you can easily pull in a good enough salary to give you a comfortable standard of living, particularly if your missus is also pulling in similar money, and you're willing to live outside the immediate downtown area.

So yeah, perhaps a slightly different perspective.

Can anyone recommend any good Twitter accounts, aside from Ben Rabidoux, that cover the whole Vancouver real estate situation?

https://twitter.com/SteveSaretsky - realtor that thinks the level of speculation has gone nuts. Often posts MLS data.
https://twitter.com/JenStDen - City Politics reporter at StarMetro Vancouver (which is best at local current events coverage)

https://twitter.com/pricetags - Gordon Price. Super smart ex-councillor. Usually reposts from PriceTags blog (which is great).

Thanks for these, and to everyone else who provided accounts to follow. Great stuff!

There's a big tech company in Vancouver with well over a thousand employees, and I won't say which, which has basically told everyone to work from home because somebody came back from a coronavirus high risk region last weekend and decided to immediately go to work the next day. Turns out mid this week they came down with flu like symptoms.

It's EA.
