I'd love to be able to ambush them with melee attacks from above. The sand throwing mechanic was neat but completely useless and I hope they will still include a tweaked version. Sure, melee doesn't exactly sound "Tomb Raider" but whatever.
Good news - Square Enix announced lately that despite the fact that Tomb Raider, Sleeping Dogs and Hitman didn't make big profits for the company (Square claims they broke even with the development costs) - they're all getting sequels and the company just has to rethink their promotion and pricing policies.

I am glad they see reason, at least. I enjoyed most of these titles or at least have them on my watch list.

Bought this on the steam sale a while back and just got around to playing it. I've enjoyed it quite a bit and I'm glad it's getting a sequel, though I wish they'd put more emphasis on survival ala MGS3.

One thing I gotta ask though: Am I the only one getting huge gay vibes from Lara and Sam? Maybe it's just because my sister's gay and I've grown accustomed to picking up on which of her friends are lesbians as well, ("gaydar-by-proxy," if you will) but drat near every time they're on screen it feels like they're ten minutes away from finding a quiet place to study the history of Sappho, if you catch my drift.

Is it just me...?

Tomb Raider's (PS3/360) gonna be on Amazon Gold Box today at 9am Pacific till noon. Not sure how much yet. Maybe $20 range? I paid $40 for the game and thought it was worth it, and that was after I had already Red Box'd it and beat it.... I really like this game. :v:

I thought they were a pretty good representation of a certain kind of particularly close friendship I've seen before, but thought the usual Internet crowd was overreacting right up until the ending where Sam puts on the bright white maiden dress and Lara bridal-carries her down the side of a mountain. Then I started to think Rhianna Pratchett was doing it on purpose.

That was my response as well since I just finished the game literally within the last 1/2 hour. Up until then it was kind of "Ok, I'm probably just reading too much into it" but at that point it kind of moved into "Yeah, this is totally intentional."

Be friends!
I finsihed this last weekend, after buying it on a whim, and it really surprised me how much I liked it. I've only played one previous Tomb Raider ages ago, the second one I think, and thought it was OK, but not much more. This new one really worked as a straight forward action adventure game. The combat was really well done and the platforming could have been expanded on, but what was there was decent enough. I'm old, so I prefer puzzle style platforming to pixel perfect jumping. There could have been a bit more free form adventuring though. I liked that part

Story wise it was decent enough. Simplistic plot and apart from Lara none of the characters really stood out. But nothing was really bad either. It was just a workmanlike background that didn't get in the way of the actual gaming. Lara Croft herself felt like a pretty good protagonist. A clear step up from the previous iteration. She actually had a personality beyond tits and hotpants this time. All in all a very good game. I liked it more than Bioshock: Infinite even.

Hadn't seen that article! Thanks for the link; an interesting read. Also, pro-tip on comments. Should've taken your advice on that one

Maybe it's just because I am in the right gaming mood at the moment, but this game is just going from strength to strength for me at the moment. And I say that while being half-way through a third playthrough! Kicking it up to Hard contributes. Kind of like Insanity Mass Effect - not gruelling hard, to be sure, but rather, less room for error. That said, as much as I enjoy the action, I specifially enjoy it embedded within the framework of the single-player campaign, and everything about how *that* is structured. I can't imagine I'll ever try the MP ever (since it'd be the game stripped of much of what I like about it, like all MP in games where I enjoy the SP).

Edit: The nod to Bioshock Infinite is an interesting one. I played through that one three times too, but for that game things were starting to get quite stale by the end of the 3rd run. TR seems to have better longevity for me. And yes, by far and away the best 'Lara as actual character' too.

I finished TR yesterday after having it on my backlog for weeks. What an amazing game. I'm not going to spoil anything just going to say that the start of the game is kind of slow and boring but after I get the pistol... god drat, everything ramps up. They managed to make shooting really fun, gun hit feedback on enemies is at Rage levels. Making a guy stumble, then fall to a cliff or shoot some guy's hand before he throws the explosive...

Puzzles are simple but well thought and the animations feel fluid between jumps, dodging, and executing enemies. I found the plot interesting and loved how Lara started as a vulnerable student and ended as an expert killer but still vulnerable. I never liked old Tomb Raider games much, but I loved the poo poo out of this one. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light isn't the same kind of game but I loved it too.

If Square Enix/Eidos make more Tomb Raider games like this, I'll buy them without thinking.

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=158140324 Left me speechles when I found that I could climb up that loving tower.

I think this new Lara is the best representation they could make. She's a really smart and fragile woman, who happens to become a survivor, yet it doesn't forget friends and what matters.

Does turning up the difficulty to hard make the combat actually tough on the PC? You can really just take your time getting headshots on people in most cases so far, and when you don't, it's because they're charging right into your shotgun. I mean, I don't want to seem like I'm complaining about the game controlling well, it's just that the enemies don't really pose much of a threat. Right now I'm finishing up the shantytown. These goddamn games make me way too OCD, especially when I accidentally get the treasure maps and just spend the next 20 minutes finding every single collectible.

Sometimes is cooler to feel overpowered and not need to hide to regen health every 5 seconds. It may be too easy towards the end with the weapons upgrade but I'm not complaining if I'm headshotting everything with the pistol or destroying knees with the shotgun so I can execute them. :getin:

Have to say it is kinda neat to not fight hyper competent enemies all the time. The parts when they realize that you have a machine gun or grenade launcher and they have a bow and arrow and starts to panic was fun.

Thank you, AmazonTony for matching the Steam sale price.

I think I'm getting close to half-way through the game (just finished the Chasm Monastery bit with the bell puzzle.) Random thoughts:
- I'm not a fan of QTEs but am especially not a fan of one that requires you to move the left stick on the Xbox controller rapidly side-to-side. Thank you for asking my non-dominant thumb to rapidly do poo poo.
- I've only done one of the optional tombs (the one that is basically thrown in your lap) but it seemed way too easy. Maybe I am just used to Assassin's Creed tombs which are pretty tricky especially with the timing :argh: and platforming :bang: bullshit.
- How much time should I spend hunting and picking berries? I did a little of it after one of the first camps, haven't done it since as I was getting Red Dead Redemption flashbacks and realized how unfun it got after a while.
- Do I have to worry about finding ammo for the bow? It seems to be in shorter supply now that the firearms have been introduced, and I'm enjoying using it.
- This seems like a really short game.

Yeah the optional tombs are neat but they're not very long and none of them are very hard. Honestly nothing about this game was tough but I still enjoyed it.

Only as long as you want. It's a good way to grind out experience in some areas and I found hunting stuff to be genuinely fun but that's all it's used for.

You have to be judicious if you want to use the bow the entire way through the game. I mostly ignored gun and never really had a problem with arrow consumption, especially after picking up skills that let you re-use arrows easier.

Yeah, I was actually positively surprised about TR's length.
Steam says I have 19 hours logged after one playthrough, although a couple of those are probably afk time / game running in the background and I'm someone who really, really takes his time exploring everything in games like this -- which, granted TR is pretty much made for. Still, I went into this expecting a ~7 hour, linear, polished, on-the-rails adventure, and I was really, really surprised and impressed that it was much, much more than that.

True - this game seems to be pretty free of padding. Even the optional stuff (finding the goodies, tombs, etc.) extends the length but it still doesn't feel they went out of their way to make the game last twice as long so they could brag about the length.

The major thing I dislike about this game is the upgrades to weapons. I wasn't a big fan of having to methodically search every single crate just on the hopes that there was a upgrade piece in it. Not to mention, it seems to be a little inconsistent on where you will find upgrade parts.

I got into a lot of matches, with people who had already prestige-equivalented at least once. And they were loving terrible. This is on PC, at least. Mostly russians, I think. It's kind of shittily put together, though. Your first primary guns are useless, you might as well just use the pistol all the time until you can upgrade your bow into a rail gun. Or until you get a shotgun with explosive rounds.

I can't think of anything Far Cry 3 has in common with Lost beyond "tropical island." Maybe those side quest underground missions but those seemed to mostly be an excuse for corridor shooting more than anything. Tomb Raider, on the other hand, has the mysterious and ruthless previous inhabitants; strange, potentially supernatural, dangers; secret agents trying to uncover and steal the island's secrets.

Then again I didn't think much of Far Cry 3 in the first place.

Eh, you're probably right, I just got a huge Lost vibe from the underground bunkers, particularly each one having a different symbol. I thought the aesthetics of the island itself were more Lost-like.

That said I loved both games and would happily play more games set on mysterious islands filled with old bunkers and dangerous wildlife.
